Two foreign business groups have welcomed recent deregulations by the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC).
The US and European trade groups said the changes to the financial services industry make Taiwan’s banking environment more competitive.
In a joint statement yesterday, the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (AmCham) and the European Chamber of Commerce Taipei (ECCT) said the recent progress in cross-strait financial cooperation has created an opportunity for Taiwan to become an important offshore yuan market in the Asia-Pacific region.
The groups also praised the commission for setting policy and broadening the business scope of the local financial market with reference to financial market developments in Hong Kong and Singapore, the statement said.
US and European financial firms support the government’s policy to include the financial services industry in the free economic pilot zones and expand the business scope of offshore banking units, the statement said.
“The policy could spur the repatriation of capital currently offshore,” it said.
The trade groups added that the approach is essential to enhance the onshore financial market and would lead to growth in investment, job opportunities and the overall economy.
The two groups will continue to provide recommendations while adopting international expertise and know-how to benefit local corporations and consumers, the statement said.
