Local home electronics giant Tatung Co (大同) yesterday unveiled its latest 3D monitor prototype, joining the growing number of companies venturing into 3D technology products.
The company said it was in talks with a handful of clients and aims for bulk shipments in the second half of the year.
Tatung introduced its first prototype of the 21.5-inch monitor in June last year. The model shown yesterday was enhanced technologically for better 3D viewing, said Tsou Chien-lung (鄒健龍), a senior manager of innovative production division at Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd (CPT, 中華映管).
Tsou was speaking on the sidelines of an event where Tatung, which controls about 24 percent of CPT, displayed a series of green home electronics for the year.
The monitor, which allows viewers to watch 3D images without having to put on special glasses, was the work of 30 engineers at CPT, Tatung’s panel-manufacturing arm, Tsou said.
Tatung’s move into the 3D TV and monitor field would put it in competition against tech giants such as Panasonic, LG, Samsung and Sony.
Samsung recently launched its first series of 3D TVs in Taiwan, with price tags of NT$129,900 (US$3,936) and NT$189,000 for 46-inch and 55-inch models respectively.
Tatung said it was in talks with a pachinko operator in Japan, that has shown interest in deploying 12.1-inch 3D screens at its gaming centers.
If the deal is sealed, it would generate “thousands” in shipments for Tatung this year, Tsou added.
Tatung’s 3D monitor started to stir interest in the local market last year, with the company selling 46 units to commercial clients.
The company said it has no immediate plans to launch 3D products for the consumer market until more 3D content become readily available.
