Far Eastone secures WiMAX license

By Shelley Shan  /  STAFF REPORTER

Far Eastone Telecommunications (FET, 遠傳電信) acquired a permit from the National Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday to set up the systems for the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) Service.

The permit expires on March 31 next year. Once the construction is completed and certified by the NCC, FET can acquire the official license to offer WiMAX service. The company must start operations within six months after it acquires the official license.

FET is one of the companies to win a bid two years ago for operating the WiMAX service, along with VMAX Telecom (威邁斯電信), First International Telecom Corp (大眾電信), Global Mobile (全球一動), Tatung Co (大同公司) and Vastar Cable TV System Corp (威達有線電視).

Tatung obtained the official WiMAX license last year and is to inaugurate the WiMAX service in Penghu on the 27th of this month. VMAX and Vastar, along with FET, have secured permits to construct facilities to offer the WiMAX service.

The NCC is reviewing applications from Global Mobile and First International Telecom for permits to build WiMAX facilities.

Vastar aims to start its service in Taichung if it obtains the license, whereas VMAX will target customers in Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County and Miaoli County.
