The Australian government acknowledged community “revulsion” over huge executive salaries yesterday but warned premature action to rein in fat cats may backfire and increase their remuneration. Community anger over the issue has been building since it was revealed last week that a clothing manufacturer, Pacific Brands, which sacked 1,850 people tripled the pay of its chief executive last year.
Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said cases such as Pacific Brands underlined concerns about massive executive pay at a time when workers were losing their jobs and the government was determined to act.
“We are now canvassing all options to deal with executive pay, and we share the community’s sense of disquiet and, indeed, revulsion when they see some of these huge salaries published in the newspapers,” she told Channel Ten TV.
However, Gillard refused to say what options were available, saying only that Australia was working on the issue through the G20.
Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner said some ideas, such as an opposition suggestion that shareholders receive a binding vote on executive salaries, sounded good but were difficult to implement.
“It just underlines the fact that in this area it’s very difficult,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “We don’t want governments mandating salaries. We don’t want governments mandating wage rates in companies.”
