The combined revenues of the nation¡¦s three science-based industrial parks amounted to NT$1.22 trillion (US$39.1 billion) in the first half of the year, up 17.2 percent from the same period last year, statistics released by the National Science Council yesterday showed.
The council predicted that the science parks¡¦ revenues for the full year would hit a record-high of NT$2.18 trillion.
For the six months ending June, the revenues of the Hsinchu Science Park increased 4.3 percent year-on-year to NT$553.4 billion, while those of the Southern Taiwan Science Park and the Central Taiwan Science Park rose 30.5 percent to NT$301.42 billion and 51 percent to NT$167.38 billion respectively.
Among the six major industries with operations in the parks, semiconductors posted sales of NT$485.57 billion, or 47.5 percent of the total, while optoelectronics saw sales of NT$451.98 billion, or 44.22 percent.
These were followed by computers and peripherals with NT$42.24 billion, precision machinery with NT$19.57 billion, communications with NT$16.49 billion and biotechnology with NT$3.77 billion.
At the end of last month, the number of licensed manufacturers in the science parks totaled 691, including 444 at the Hsinchu Science Park, 157 at the Southern Taiwan Science Park and 90 at the Central Taiwan Science Park, the council said.
The government aims to expand the number of manufacturers in the science parks to 800 by 2011, with their total output reaching NT$3 trillion and total number of workers hitting 300,000, the council said.
