Global chip sales rose 4.5% last month

Global chip sales rose 4.5 percent in August from the previous month, led by demand for microprocessors and flash memory, the Semiconductor Industry Association said.

Total sales increased to US$21.5 billion from US$20.6 billion in July, the San Jose, California-based organization said on Monday in a statement. Sales gained 4.9 percent from a year earlier.

Electronics manufacturers, which typically start gearing up for holiday sales in August, spurred demand, the group said.

Sales of so-called Nand flash memory, used in memory cards for digital cameras, rose 19 percent from July.

Demand for personal computers in developing countries also boosted sales, the group said. PC sales account for about 40 percent of semiconductor revenue.

Research firm Gartner Inc expects worldwide PC demand to climb 13 percent this year, according to the statement.
