EVA to cease passenger flights to Paris

Taipei-based EVA Airways Corp (長榮航空) has decided to end its Taipei-Paris passenger flight service from Nov. 23 because of increasing operational costs and to launch a cargo-only service to the French capital in January, the company said yesterday.

EVA said that surging fuel prices and the high fees for the right to fly through Russian airspace had made it uneconomical for the airline to offer passenger flight service on the route.

After passenger flight service to Paris is canceled, the planes serving the route will be added to the fleet making Taipei-Los Angeles flights, the airline said, adding that the number of flights to Los Angeles would increase from 17 per week to 20 per week.

EVA Air said that passengers planning to fly to Paris could take advantage of its flights to other European cities -- including London, Amsterdam and Vienna -- from which points they could continue either by plane or on the Eurostar express train.

Meanwhile, EVA Air also announced it would offer non-stop flights to New York starting on Dec. 4. The airline's flights to New York currently stop over in Seattle. The airline said the move would reduce travel time by four hours.

The airline also said that the return flight from New York to Taipei would include a 75-minute refueling stop in Anchorage, Alaska, which it said was necessary to avoid strong head winds.
