Acer Group founder Stan Shih (施振榮) said yesterday that he would use his influence within the information technology (IT) industry to promote the APEC forum Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) pro-ject when he participates in an APEC leadership meeting on behalf of President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) next month.
Shih made the pledge one day after Chen announced that he had named the tycoon as his special envoy to the 2007 APEC summit, which will be held on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 in Sydney, Australia.
Shih said he felt a great responsibility about the job and he hoped he could share his IT experience with other member states in order to contribute to Taiwan and the international community.
Shih said concrete plans for his APEC mission would be unveiled after he talks with the president, although he said he would be proactive on issues related to the digital divide and would seek to forge economic and trade relations.
Shih said Taiwan's edge in hardware production has been instrumental in the implementation of the ADOC project. He said Taiwan needs to further integrate the efforts and resources of the US, Japan and South Korea.
Shih is recognized for having built Acer into an internationally recognized brand.
