LG.Philips LCD Co unveiled a flat panel that is 18cm shorter than the tallest human on record, wresting away Samsung Electronics Co's title as maker of the world's largest liquid-crystal-display (LCD) screen.
LG.Philips, the world's second-largest LCD maker by sales, said its LCD spans 100 inches (254cm) diagonally. The Seoul-based company announced the new panel in a statement today. Robert Pershing Wadlow, at 272cm, is the world's tallest man, according to the Guinness World Records.
Samsung Electronics, the No. 1 seller of LCDs, had held the record for largest LCD panel since March last year, when the Suwon, South Korea-based company showcased a screen measuring 82 inches (208.3cm).
While such panels are years away from commercialization, the race to develop larger screens underscores how LCD companies are narrowing the technological gap they face against plasma displays, which are typically cheaper and larger than LCD sets. Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, said in January that it developed a 103 inch (261.6cm) plasma display.
