Sharp eyes TV screens from local firms

Sharp Corp, the world's biggest maker of liquid-crystal display TVs, may buy LCD panels under 32 inches from local makers, including Quanta Display Inc (¼s½÷¹q¤l).

The Japanese firm had said earlier this month that it was discussing a deal with Quanta Display to buy TV panels from it. Currently, Quanta Display supplies Sharp with LCD panels for PCs.

"We are considering using panels from Taiwan companies for our smaller TVs," Sharp president Katsuhiko Machida told reporters at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo yesterday. "We are in talks with several companies."

Sharp, which said it will continue making its own panels for TVs bigger than 37 inches, expects to start buying the smaller displays from other companies next spring.

Quanta Display is a possible supplier, said Sharp spokesman Hiroshi Takenami.

Quanta Display shares gained 4.7 percent to NT$11.10 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday, while Sharp rose 1.1 percent to ?1,736 (US$14.60) in Tokyo.

Machida said the shortage of LCD panels should continue until Sharp's second Kameyama factory is up and running.
