No comment on Spansion report: TSMC

BLOOMBERG

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufact-uring Co (TSMC, 台積電), the world's largest supplier of made-to-order chips, declined to comment on a report saying it will make flash-memory chips for Spansion Inc.

"We won't comment on such reports about markets, clients," Tzeng Jinnhaw (曾晉皓), a spokesman for the Hsinchu, Taiwan-based company, said by telephone today.

TSMC obtained flash-memory chip orders from Advanced Micro Devices Inc's Spansion, a Chinese-language newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information.

The Taiwanese company will eventually produce 20,000 flash- memory chips a month, compared with the 3,000 a month it will make initially, for Spansion, the Taipei-based newspaper said.

TSMC and Spansion signed the contract last month, the report said. Rival United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯電) has also been trying to get orders from the Sunnyvale, California-based company, the newspaper said.

Spansion Inc is a flash-memory venture between Advanced Micro Devices and Fujitsu Ltd from Japan.
