Storage auctions offer glimpse of a secondhand world

NY TIMES NEWS SERVICE , NEW YORK

"Let's rock and roll," Bader calls, picking up his footstool.

As they walk through the maze, he stops before No. 1139, which, according to a list of contents, contains "loads of cartons, furniture, bed, bag, table, lamp, clothing."

The lock is popped, a mothball smell is released, and a person's belongings are revealed.

"Oh, baby," Bader says. "Oh, an ornate lamp. Auntie!"

People poke and prod, which is bad form in this world. Bader warns the bidders "not to get too emotionally involved in this room."

The bidding ends at US$125, with that man Fernando winning the right to cart away the belongings of an absent someone, who on this day is known only as "Auntie."
