Silicon Integrated, United Micro pace TAIEX gainers

Stocks gained yesterday. Silicon Integrated System Corp (矽統), an affiliate of United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯電), rose after saying it plans to separate its manufacturing unit, helping it focus on its chip design business.

The TAIEX gained 76.04, or 1.4 percent, to 5,699.26. More than two stocks rose for every one that declined. The futures contract for September delivery rose 1.1 percent to 5,716.

Silicon Integrated rose NT$1.90, or 6.9 percent, to NT$29.50. The company plans to split its computer-chip production business into a separate company on Dec. 15, the company said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange on Monday. UMC added NT$0.70, or 2.4 percent, to NT$30.

Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) rose NT$0.40, or 0.8 percent, to NT$48.30 on news that the company said its investment unit is considering buying a stake in a Chinese Internet-service provider as the phone company seeks its first expansion in China.

Nanya Technology Corp (南亞科技) rose NT$0.20, or 0.8 percent, to NT$27.

VIA Technologies Inc (威盛電子), the world's second-largest maker of chipsets for personal computers, rose NT$2, or 4.2 percent, to NT$50 after the company said it will pay up to NT$75 a share to buy back as many as 15 million shares, the company said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange on Monday.

China Airlines Co (華航) was steady at NT$14 after profit-taking trimmed gains on news of cargo transportation fee hikes and positive guidance for this year and next.

The airlines said Monday that it expects to post a net profit in the third quarter with sales to breach NT$80 billion dollars next year.
