Siemens wins contract for Kaohsiung rapid transit

Siemens of Germany won a US$326-million contract yesterday to supply cars, signalling and a power system to a mass rapid transit system for Taiwan's port city of Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp (KRTC) Chairman Chen Cheng-jung (陳振榮) and Siemens Turnkey System Manager Karl Neubeck signed the contract at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Singapore, a KRTC spokesperson said.

"Signing the contract in a third country is to enable us to seek a neutral party's arbitration should disputes arise after the line is built," the spokesperson said.

Siemens will provide 126 rail cars, signalling, direct-current power system and consultancy service for the rapid transit line.

The 42.7km line will consist of two lines. Construction will begin in October and is scheduled to be finished in October 2007.

Taichung also plans to build a rapid transit line to ease traffic congestion.
