The average temperature in Taiwan for the first half of this year was the highest since 1950, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday. The bureau said that the average temperature from January to July was 23.95oC, 0.97oC higher than the average for the period. The CWB warned that temperatures would remain high for the next few days, with afternoon thundershowers expected. Meanwhile, a typhoon has been forming in the Pacific, the bureau said. Typhoon Phanfone, the 13th typhoon reported in the Pacific this year, will not pose a threat to Taiwan as it was traveling in a northwestern direction away from the Japanese island of Iwo Jima at a speed of 21kph as of yesterday afternoon, the CWB said. Meteorologists are also closely monitoring a low-pressure system which might turn into a tropical storm. They system is located in the South China Sea near the Spratly Islands.

STATE OF THE NATION: The legislature should invite the president to deliver an address every year, the TPP said, adding that Lai should also have to answer legislators’ questions The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) yesterday proposed inviting president-elect William Lai (賴清德) to make a historic first state of the nation address at the legislature following his inauguration on May 20.
