The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a test alert at 9:21am today, simulating an early warning of an earthquake as part of National Disaster Prevention Day drills.
The test warning, sent to mobile devices nationwide, instructed people across Taiwan to "drop, cover and hold on" for one minute to practice the safe way to respond in the event of an earthquake.
The message was sent at 9:21am to commemorate the Sept. 21 earthquake that devastated Taiwan in 1999, the Ministry of the Interior said.

The CWA would conduct two early warning tests today, an earthquake alert at 9:21am, followed by a tsunami alert at 9:30am, as part of the National Disaster Prevention Day drills, the ministry said yesterday.
The simulated tsunami warning was sent to townships and urban districts in coastal areas, advising them to remain calm, the CWA said.
At 10am, a message to cancel the tsunami warning was sent to the same areas, completing the drill of issuing and then canceling such a warning, it said.
The National Disaster Prevention Day exercises are to enhance public preparedness for national emergencies and test Taiwan's disaster response capabilities, the ministry said.
