The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has amended its regulations on investment subsidies for businesses investing in countries with which Taiwan has diplomatic relations, raising the maximum subsidy to NT$60 million (US$1.9 million) to encourage investment in diplomatic allies.
The ministry has previously amended the regulations on investment subsidies for businesses investing in countries with which Taiwan maintains diplomatic relations, with the aim of encouraging investment in those countries, creating jobs, raising incomes, promoting economic and social development, and strengthening Taiwan’s economic, trade and diplomatic ties with its allies.
To make the subsidy system more flexible and to better address the diverse needs of businesses as their overseas investments expand, the ministry said it has amended the regulations to broaden the scope of eligible expenses.

Under the revised rules, businesses applying for subsidies for the first time may have their expenses for the full year, dating back to Jan. 1, considered for eligibility.
The previous requirement that applicants could claim only one of the following expenses — local employee salaries, factory and equipment costs, office or land rents, or financing interest — has also been relaxed, allowing businesses to apply for subsidies for two or all three applicable categories simultaneously, it said.
Under the revised rules, the maximum cumulative subsidy has been raised to NT$60 million, the ministry said.
Subsidies for employing local workers are calculated at 30 percent of each employee’s monthly salary; subsidies for factory and equipment costs, business premises or land rent are calculated at 30 percent of the rent actually paid; and subsidies for financing interest are calculated at 50 percent of the interest actually paid on loans from financial institutions, it said.
Typhoon Saudel has shown signs of weakening but is still expected to affect Taiwan when it comes closest to the nation on Friday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today. A sea warning for Typhoon Saudel, which has shifted to a more northerly track as it nears Taiwan, is expected early tomorrow, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today. As of this morning, Saudel was about 650km east-northeast of Taipei, moving west-northwest at 12kph with maximum sustained winds of 162kph, CWA data showed.
