Periods of heavy rain are expected up and down the country this weekend as Typhoon Dolphin approaches northern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today.
It said it expects to issue a sea warning at 2.30pm today.
As of 8am this morning, the typhoon was located 770km east-northeast of Taipei, moving at 12kph, with maximum sustained winds of 38 meters per second, it said.

The outer cloud bands of the typhoon would bring brief showers to western Taiwan today, with isolated showers in the northeastern region, CWA senior weather specialist Wu Wan-hua (伍婉華) said.
Those in coastal areas should be on alert for strong wind gusts and waves, as waves have already reached up to six meters, she said.
Typhoon Dolphin is forecast to pass closest to Taiwan tomorrow and Sunday through the sea north of the country, she added.
Northern Taiwan and the central mountain region are expected to experience heavy or torrential rain over the weekend, with mountainous areas in the north likely to receive rainfall exceeding the threshold for torrential rain, Wu said.
Meanwhile, southern and northeast Taiwan, as well as other mountainous areas, are forecast to experience scattered showers, she said.
Conditions are expected to ease on Monday with rainfall becoming more scattered across the country, though southwesterly winds are expected to still bring heavy rain to mountainous areas in the south, she said.
