A new forward surgical team established by Tri-Service General Hospital Songshan Branch can increase the survival rate of military personnel and contribute to Taiwan’s resilience, President William Lai (賴清德) said today.
His comments came at the opening ceremony for the hospital’s new aviation medicine building, which he attended along with Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo (顧立雄) and National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮).
Lai thanked staff from the hospital, the Ministry of National Defense and the Medical Affairs Bureau for their hard work in ensuring that the aviation medicine building was completed on schedule.

The new aviation medicine wing would not only benefit the armed forces, but also the public, Lai said.
To accomplish the goal of improving the health of Taiwan's society, the government has established the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee, a new cancer drug fund and disease prevention control plans, Lai said.
Hopefully, the hospital can participate in these programs as well, Lai added.
In an emergency, every hospital must be able to meet the need of providing medical services, Lai said, adding that each medical institution is important for society’s resiliency.
Regarding the new forward surgical team, Lai said that providing immediate treatment can increase the survival rate of military personnel.
As one of the few forward surgical teams in Taiwan, the hospital has a role and mission to help defend society, Lai added.
Lai also spoke about the Presidential Office’s goals of reducing carbon emissions, saying that other hospitals have recently held events sharing their own experiences on saving energy and limiting their carbon footprint.
For example, replacing old equipment like air conditioners with new ones can save energy and reduce emissions, Lai said.
The government can cooperate with energy service companies to conserve more energy and reduce carbon footprints, Lai said.
