The arched footbridge leading to Sansiantai (三仙台) island in Taitung County is to reopen to the public on Feb. 5 after more than a year, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration said on Tuesday.
The iconic eight-arched bridge in the county’s Chenggong Township (成功) was damaged during strong earthquakes that hit the area on Sept. 17 and 18, 2022.
On Dec. 23 of the same year it was closed to the public for repairs.

As inspectors found no signs of further structural damage for more than a year, the agency said it plans to reopen the bridge on Feb. 5 in time for the Lunar New Year.
However, the bridge is to temporarily close whenever winds reach 10 or above on the Beaufort scale (at least 89kph), as recommended by engineers, it said.
Additionally, the visitors’ center at Siaoyeliu (小野柳) in Taitung City is expected to reopen on Feb. 10, the agency said.
The park closed the center for renovations on Sept. 1, 2022.

A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
