Prosecutors on Friday released a worker on NT$30,000 bail after questioning over his installation of an air-conditioning (AC) unit that fell from a window, killing a woman on the street below.
The woman surnamed Huang (黃), 21, was waiting at a bus stop near Exit 2 of the Xinpu MRT station in New Taipei City’s Banciao District (板橋) on Thursday afternoon, when the 30kg AC unit fell from the 17th floor.
Bystanders administered CPR as Huang’s sister called 119. She was declared dead about an hour later at a hospital.

Police found that a worker surnamed Lee (李), 31, had been installing the AC unit in a 17th-story apartment.
Lee allegedly told police that he usually installs split-type ACs and was not very familiar with window units, even calling a colleague before starting to ask how to install it.
Police on Friday sent Lee to the New Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office for questioning on suspicion of negligent manslaughter, punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to NT$500,000.
The office listed bail at NT$30,000 and restricted his movement to his residence.
Safety regulations mandate that any objects that could fall from a height be secured, the New Taipei City Labor Affairs Department said.
The department’s Labor Standards Inspection Office was on Friday to conduct an investigation, and if violations are confirmed, would impose the highest possible fine of NT$300,000 under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (職業安全衛生法), it added.

Taiwan is to have nine extended holidays next year, led by a nine-day Lunar New Year break, the Cabinet announced yesterday. The nine-day Lunar New Year holiday next year matches the length of this year’s holiday, which featured six extended holidays. The increase in extended holidays is due to the Act on the Implementation of Commemorative and Festival Holidays (紀念日及節日實施條例), which was passed early last month with support from the opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party. Under the new act, the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve is also a national holiday, and Labor Day would no longer be limited

Winds at Beaufort scale level 7 — ranging from 50kph to 61.5kph — extended up to 80km from the center, it added. Forecaster Kuan Hsin-ping
COMMITMENTS: The company had a relatively low renewable ratio at 56 percent and did not have any goal to achieve 100 percent renewable energy, the report said Pegatron Corp ranked the lowest among five major final assembly suppliers in progressing toward Apple Inc’s commitment to be 100 percent carbon neutral by 2030, a Greenpeace East Asia report said yesterday. While Apple has set the goal of using 100 percent renewable energy across its entire business, supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030, carbon emissions from electronics manufacturing are rising globally due to increased energy consumption, it said. Given that carbon emissions from its supply chain accounted for more than half of its total emissions last year, Greenpeace East Asia evaluated the green transition performance of Apple’s five largest final
