With a continental cold air mass expected to approach Taiwan next week, temperatures are forecast to fall to as low as 12°C across most of the country, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.
Bureau forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan (張承傳) said that the cold air is expected to start affecting Taiwan on Monday and Tuesday, pushing temperatures down across most of the country, especially in the early morning.

Daytime highs for the two days would be 15°C in northern Taiwan, 21°C to 22°C in central Taiwan and 25°C in the south, he said.
Despite the cold air, Taiwan proper is unlikely to see heavy precipitation, with only sporadic showers in the north, while cloudy to sunny skies are forecast in central and southern areas, he said.
The cold air is expected to weaken on Wednesday and Thursday, with lows of 14°C to 15°C in the north and daytime highs of 19°C, he said.
However, the weather is forecast to turn unstable again from Friday next week, with a northeasterly seasonal wind system to push daytime highs down to 14°C to 16°C, Chang said, adding that the cold weather would continue until Jan. 23, the second day of the Year of the Rabbit.
Windward locations in northern and northeastern parts of Taiwan are likely to have some rain as a result of the wind system, Chang said.
Today, a front is expected to destabilize weather across Taiwan, with showers possible in eastern parts of the country, he said.
Fog and low cloud are expected to affect western Taiwan as well as Kinmen and Lienchiang counties today and tomorrow, he said.
