The Chiayi City Election Committee has postponed the city’s Nov. 26 mayoral vote following the death of independent candidate Huang Shao-tsung (黃紹聰) early yesterday.
After it was informed by a family member of Huang’s death, the committee said that Article 30 of the Civil Servants Election and Recall Act (公職人員選舉罷免法) requires that an election be halted if a registered candidate passes away after the deadline for registration and the day before voting.
The cause of death of Huang, a 72-year-old bookkeeper and former temple chairman who had sought land justice, was unclear.
