Night markets are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the nation, and one — Taichung’s Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) — has drawn more interest online than any other, according to a recent online data analysis.
The market is one of the largest in the nation and is recognized as the origin of many of the nation’s most popular snacks, such as crepes, hujiao bing (胡椒餅, pepper cakes) and takoyaki (Japanese-style octopus balls), according to the DailyView Online Thermometer, a Chinese-language Web service that analyzes the online circulation of current events.
It combed through online posts and articles that mention night markets and found that Fengjia was the most talked about night market on the Internet, followed by Taipei’s Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) and the Luodong Night Market (羅東夜市) in Yilan County.
The Shilin market is often cited as a “must-see” destination for foreigners, while Luodong is known for its spring onion pancakes (蔥油餅) and tapioca balls with red bean paste (包心粉圓), it said.
The others on the DailyView Top 10 list are Tainan’s Garden Night Market (花園夜市), which ranked fourth, followed by Keelung’s, one in Kenting, Pingtung County, Kaohsiung’s Rueifang (瑞芳) and Liouhe (六合) markets and Taipei’s Ningxia (寧夏) and Shida (師大) markets.
The ranking was based on an analysis of data collected between Dec. 17 last year and Wednesday last week, DailyView said.

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck eastern Taiwan's Hualien County at 2:23pm today, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The epicenter of the temblor was 5.4 kilometers northeast of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 34.9 km, according to the CWA. The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was the highest in Hualien County, where it measured 2 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale. The quake also measured an intensity of 1 in Yilan county, Taichung, Nantou County, Changhua County and Yunlin County, the CWA said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
