Dumpling restaurant Din Tai Fung was ranked sixth among the 101 best restaurants in Asia selected by the US Web site The Daily Meal.
Din Tai Fung, headquartered in Taipei, is among six Taiwanese eateries named as one of the 101 Best Restaurants in Asia by the Web site on Oct. 10. It was in first place last year.
The other Taiwanese establishments are: DN Innovacion in Taipei (ranked 42nd), Le Mout in Taichung (43rd), Osteria de Angie in Taipei (61st), La Cocotte in Taipei (73rd) and Seventy-Two Beef Noodle Restaurant in Taipei (79th).
A total of 46 restaurants in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau were on The Daily Meal’s list this year.
The selection spans 12 countries: Taiwan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam — and the two territories of Hong Kong and Macau.
Nineteen Hong Kong restaurants were picked, headed by Felix at The Peninsula Hotel (fifth place), while Beijing’s Dali Courtyard (ranked 17th) topped the 15 Chinese restaurants on the list.
This year, the Web site offered restaurant choices in 28 cities, three more than last year.
The restaurants selected are located not only in capitals such as Taipei, Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo, but smaller municipalities, including Taichung, Danang in Vietnam and Unawatuna in Sri Lanka.
Describing the selection criteria, the Web site said: “We considered restaurants offering the cuisines of their own regions, of course, but also those that serve food from other parts of Asia. We also included a number of great restaurants offering classic French, authentic Italian, imaginative East-West fusion, and other cuisines of the world.”
