The Greater Taichung Government has put out a call for short films to promote the city’s attractions.
In recent years, short films of between 30 seconds and five minutes in length and shot on a low budget have become a popular way for the nation’s local governments nationwide to promote local attractions and tourism.
Shih Ching-wen (石靜文), head of the municipality’s Government Information Office, said on Thursday that there are many individuals in greater Taichung with talent and bright ideas, with some aspiring movie directors just waiting for the chance to make their name in the entertainment industry.
“They are encouraged to enter the program,” she said.
Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s (李安) Life of Pi, which earlier this year won him an Oscar for best director, was partly shot in Greater Taichung.
“Since Life of Pi was shot in our county, there has been an uptake in movie-making activities,” Shih said. “We are organizing this program in a bid to foster the development of Taichung’s visual entertainment industry.”
“Taichung is a city with diverse attractions and possesses a number of cultural, touristic and leisurely options — as well as good food — that are unique to the area,” she said.
“There is a fascinating story hidden in almost every corner of the city. Inspiration may be found at the Yichung Commercial District (一中商圈), the Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) or in the Gaomei Wetlands (高美溼地) and other nature conservation parks about the city,” she added.

The number of people who reported a same-sex spouse on their income tax increased 1.5-fold from 2020 to 2023, while the overall proportion of taxpayers reporting a spouse decreased by 4.4 percent from 2014 to 2023, Ministry of Finance data showed yesterday. A saleswoman, surnamed Chen (陳), earlier this month was handed an 18-month prison term for embezzling more than 2,000 pairs of shoes while working at a department store in Tainan.
