Sixteen additional restaurants and hotels have been certified as Muslim restaurants (MR) or Muslim-friendly restaurants (MFR), the Tourism Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau said these restaurants and hotels are located in seven counties or cities, including Taipei, New Taipei City (新北市), Taoyuan County, Greater Taichung, Greater Tainan, Hualien County and Taitung County. Two are located at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
Since 2011, the bureau has entrusted the Chinese Muslim Association with the task of assisting restaurants in obtaining MR or MFR certifications.
The nation has 31 MRs or MFRs, including those who were certified yesterday.
The bureau’s efforts to attract more tourists with food prepared and cooked in accordance with Islamic and Judaic teachings, or halal food, appear to have paid off. In general, Muslim tour groups have grown from small groups to containing 50 to 70 members, the bureau said.
However, a presentation by the Chinese Muslim Association showed that the nation still needs to tap more into the market for Muslim tourists. Among the approximately 7.3 million international tourists visiting Taiwan last year, only about 600,000 were Muslim.
The association said that about 50,000 Muslims livein Taiwan.

Former president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday called for greater cooperation between Taiwan, Lithuania and the EU to counter threats to information security, including attacks on undersea cables and other critical infrastructure. Taiwanese authorities suspect Chinese sabotage in the incidents near Taiwan’s waters, while EU leaders have said Russia is the likely culprit behind similar breaches in the Baltic. “Taiwan and our European
