On a perfect Sunday morning, what better event is there to attend than one that blends elements of eco-conservation,culture, religion, entertainment and education. That event is the Huachiang Wild Goose Season Festival, which will take place tomorrow at the Huachiang Wild Goose Nature Park (華江雁鴨自然公園), under the Huachiang Bridge (華江橋) in Taipei.
Wanhua District (萬華) Chief Wang Hong-yu (王鴻裕) extended an invitation to birdwatchers wishing to catch a glimpse of the migrating colonies of wild geese at a press conference yesterday, saying that the festival would also include eco-educational games, a children's sketch competition and carnival booths.
"In addition to the fun, this year we are collaborating with the Longshan Temple (龍山寺) and holding a prayer ceremony for the wellbeing of our feathered friends and the wetlands they call home in Taiwan and around the world," Wang said.
The prayer ceremony will be held in front of the temple's Shuiguan Shrine (水官), Wang said. After the ceremony a parade will march from the temple to the park, where the carnival awaits, he said.
"Through these activities we hope to promote an interest in the local community in preserving the precious resources of our ecosystem," said Fan Yi-bin (范義彬) of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute. "Taiwan is blessed in many ways with great natural resources -- this is why the migrating wild geese have chosen us year after year as their first stop on the voyage south from Siberia."
"In order to maintain a sustainable environment to live in, Taiwanese need to realize the strong ties we share with the bionetwork and become good co-habitants with the wildlife around the nation," he said.
