It has been nearly eight years to the day since Jiang unveiled his eight-point guideline for Beijing's policy toward Taiwan, and Chen said Beijing is becoming more flexible and skillful in working out strategies toward Taiwan, although it still maintains its "peaceful reunification with Taiwan under the `one country, two systems'" principle.
For example, Beijing put aside its "one China" principle to lure Taiwan into opening direct transportation links with the communist country, Chen said.
However, Chen said, China's "one country, two systems" formula would be a tough sell to the people of Taiwan, citing a survey conducted by the Mainland Affairs Council in July last year which showed more than 70 percent of those surveyed didn't support it.
Mainstream opinion in Taiwan is to "maintain the political status quo while developing economic ties with the mainland," Chen said.
The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association has cautioned Japanese travelers to be vigilant against pickpockets at several popular tourist spots in Taiwan, including Taipei’s night markets, the Yongkang Street area, Zhongshan MRT Station, and Jiufen (九份) in New Taipei City. Scoot announced yesterday that starting in October, it would increase flights between Taipei and Japan’s Narita airport and Hokkaido, and between Singapore and Taipei.
