Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are among the sides aiming to ensure direct passage to the UEFA Europa League last 16 in today’s league phase finale with nine places in the knockout stages up for grabs.
The struggling English giants are laboring in the bottom half of the Premier League table, but do sit in the top eight of the Europa League.
Only the top eight progress automatically into the last 16, while ninth to 24th have to endure the rigors of a two-legged playoff next month.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is desperate to have two free midweeks for extra time on the training pitch to try and imbed his ideas after a turbulent first two months in charge.
The Red Devils have played 17 games in 64 days since Amorim took charge for the first time.
United have found Europe’s second-tier competition much easier to negotiate than domestic duties with four consecutive wins meaning they just need a point away to FCSB, but the Romanian champions can also secure a top-eight finish should they pull off a famous victory.
“We have to surpass ourselves, but we have done this before many times, so we will do it again,” FCSB striker Florin Tanase said.
Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou is clinging to his job by a thread after a disastrous run of six Premier League defeats in seven games plunged Tottenham into a relegation battle.
A mounting injury list has been a major factor in their troubles and victory over IF Elfsborg in north London could buy Postecoglou time to get some of his star names back for the last 16 in March.
Table-toppers SS Lazio are the only side to have guaranteed a place in the last 16.
RSC Anderlecht, Athletic Bilbao, Eintracht Frankfurt, Galatasaray, Olympique Lyonnais, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, FCSB, AZ, Bodo/Glimt, Olympiacos, Rangers, Union Saint-Gilloise and Viktoria Plzen are all assured of at least a place in the playoffs.
However, there are big names at risk of crashing out before the knockout stages.
Two-time European champions Porto sit outside the top 24 ahead of their clash with Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv, which is to be held in Belgrade due to the conflict in the Middle East.
Italy’s AS Roma are also at risk as they are 21st in the table and face a tough task against second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.
After a promising start to the competition, three consecutive defeats have plunged Ajax into peril ahead of the four-time European champions’ clash with Galatasaray in Amsterdam.
Inter on Sunday were given a letoff when they snatched a late 1-1 derby draw with AC Milan, while league leaders SSC Napoli were held by a late goal at AS Roma. Reigning champions Inter remain three points behind Napoli, who looked to be heading five clear as they led in Rome until Angelino volleyed in a stunning leveler in the first minute of stoppage-time. Angelino’s strike gave even more significance to Stefan de Vrij’s last-gasp equalizer at the San Siro. The defender forced home Nicola Zalewski’s knockdown just as it looked like Tijjani Reijnders’ opener would be enough for Milan. “I can
The Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets on Saturday did not disappoint in a thrilling midseason matchup in front of a fired-up sellout crowd of more than 18,500 fans. The top two teams in the NHL delivered with a combined nine goals, including the 877th of Alex Ovechkin’s career to put him 18 back of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record. That tied the score, the Jets pulled it out in overtime and just about everyone involved got their money’s worth out of the 5-4 game. “We knew how we were both sitting in the standings and both having real good years,” Winnipeg coach Scott

Less than a week after splashing out a world-record fee for Naomi Girma, Chelsea has spent big again to bring England midfielder Keira Walsh back to the English Women’s Super League. Walsh left European champions Barcelona after more than two years to join Chelsea for a reported £400,000 (US$496,000) on Friday. Walsh was the world’s most expensive player for two years after moving to Barcelona from Manchester City for a reported £400,000 in 2022. That status now belongs to Girma, the US defender who cost Chelsea a reported £900,000 to sign from the San Diego Wave. Still, it means 27-year-old Walsh — a technically
