Bryce Harper on Tuesday homered for his first three hits of the season, including a grand slam, as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-4.
Brandon Marsh also connected for Philadelphia, who bounced back nicely after dropping the series opener on Monday.
Spencer Turnbull struck out seven in five effective innings.

“It felt good going up there and hitting three homers,” Harper said. “It was really cool, but obviously I thought Spencer threw the ball really well... It was just really good from the pitching side.”
Harper went zero for 11 with a walk while playing in three of the Phillies’ first four games, but he broke out in a big way against the Reds.
The two-time National League Most Valuable Player hit a solo shot in the first and fourth innings against Graham Ashcraft. He capped Philadelphia’s five-run seventh against Brent Suter with his seventh career grand slam, a drive to right-center.

It was Harper’s second career three-homer game and his 26th multihomer game overall. He finished with a career-best six RBIs.
“He had a great night that’s for sure,” Reds manager David Bell said. “That’s the story. It’s never about just one player, but he had a great game. He absolutely beat us tonight.”
It was the first time a Phillies player hit three home runs in a game at Citizens Bank Park since Jayson Werth on May 16, 2008, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

“He had a really good day,” said Turnbull, who made his Phillies debut. “It was awesome to see. It’s really fun to see guys get hot — especially like that. I’m sure I’ll always remember that part.”
Playing in cold and rainy conditions, the teams combined for five errors, including two by Reds shortstop Elly de la Cruz.
Cincinnati also had a wild pitch and the Phillies had a passed ball.

Ashcraft (0-1) was charged with three runs, two earned, and four hits in his first start of the season.
Spencer Steer had three hits for the Reds, including an RBI single in the ninth. He hit a grand slam in the 10th inning of Cincinnati’s 6-3 victory on Monday night.
Turnbull (1-0) allowed an unearned run and three hits. The right-hander was thrust into the rotation when Taijuan Walker was placed on the injured list with a shoulder injury at the end of spring training.
Ricardo Pinto pitched four innings for his first career save in his first big-league appearance since 2019. He allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits.
Pinto was added to the roster when the Phillies designated right-hander Connor Brogdon for assignment before the win. Brogdon was a key piece of the team’s bullpen when they made to the 2022 World Series, but he allowed six runs in his first three appearances this year.
Pinto did not arrive at the ballpark until the fourth inning. The Phillies could not get him a flight from Rochester, where he was with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, so he had to make an eight-hour drive.
“He got stuck in traffic, but that’s a baseball player,” manager Rob Thomson said. “It’s like American Legion.”
Pinto, 30, said he always knew he would make it back to the major leagues one day because he is more mature now than he was five years ago.
“I never gave up on this,” Pinto said through an interpreter. “I feel that I’m mentally in a better position than I was before. I did not have that maturity on the mound.”
In Los Angeles, Mookie Betts hit his major-league-leading fifth home run as the Dodgers continued to lean on a consistent offense in their 5-4 victory over visiting San Francisco.
Enrique Hernandez drove in two runs and Freddie Freeman had three hits for the Dodgers, who have scored at least five runs in all eight of their games.
In a bullpen game, left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (1-0) gave up four runs and seven hits in 4-1/3 innings, while Evan Phillips recorded the final four outs for his third save.
Jorge Soler hit his first home run as a member of the Giants, while Michael Conforto had two hits and an RBI as San Francisco lost for the fourth time in six games to open the season.
Giants starter Logan Webb lasted just 3-2/3 innings in his second start. He gave up five runs on seven hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Taiwan’s participation in the Olympic Games has been a story of politics as much as sports, with the name it has competed under since 1984 — Chinese Taipei — drawing as much attention as its athletes. However, with the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad set to begin in Paris on Friday, the exploits of Taiwan’s athletes past and present who have won 36 medals since the country’s debut in Melbourne in 1956 deserve a nod. Many of Taiwan’s medal winners have gained considerable name recognition, but only two have achieved legendary status — Maysang Kalimud and Chi Cheng, the only medal winners
Shohei Ohtani on Sunday hit a 473-foot (144m) home run as the Los Angeles Dodgers went deep six times in a 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez, Gavin Lux, Austin Barnes and Jason Heyward also connected as Los Angeles swept the three-game series. “Going into the break, we weren’t playing good baseball, and then to come out fresh against a really good ball club and to play the way we did — the offense came to life,” Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said. It was the 25th time the Dodgers launched at least six homers in a game
Canada women’s soccer coach Bev Priestman on Wednesday said she would step away from the team’s opening game against New Zealand at the Paris Olympics in the wake of a drone scandal. New Zealand complained to the International Olympic Committee’s integrity unit after it said drones were flown over closed practice sessions earlier in the week. As of press time last night, Canada, the defending Olympic champions, were set to open the Paris Games against New Zealand in Saint-Etienne. In the fallout of the complaint, two staff members — assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi — were sent home, the
Conventional wisdom dictates that the average retirement age for elite female players in the intense and physically demanding sport of badminton is well under 30 years old. Five female shuttlers are set to turn that on its head when they make their fourth Olympic appearances at the Paris Games, a feat never accomplished before. Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying, 30, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, 29, Belgium’s Lianne Tan, 33, and Hong Kong’s Tse Ying Suet and Canada’s Michelle Li, both 32, are to compete for Olympic glory at Porte de La Chapelle Arena from Saturday to Aug. 5. “These achievements get missed because they’re women,” said
