Danish forward Jonas Wind on Satrurday scored two first-half goals as in-form VfL Wolfsburg romped to a 6-0 hammering of high-flying SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
Visitors Freiburg were hoping to cut the gap to Bayern Munich to two points after the leaders’ 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig on Friday, but they capitulated after falling behind to Patrick Wimmer’s second-minute opener.
Wind scored twice in the space of nine minutes to put the hosts three goals to the good at halftime.

Wolfsburg added three more in the second half, through Yannick Gerhardt, Ridle Baku and Luca Waldschmidt’s late penalty, to move up to sixth place.
Wolfsburg are now unbeaten in 10 matches, with five straight league wins, having started the season with four Bundesliga losses in their first seven games under new coach Niko Kovac.
“We got off to a very good start,” former Bayern coach Kovac said. “We [then] scored our second goal with our second shot. The momentum developed and it was like we couldn’t do anything wrong.”

It was a dreadful restart to the season for Freiburg, who had been Bayern’s closest challengers before the winter break.
“In the end, when you lose 0-6, what can you say? It’s best not to say anything, then I won’t say anything wrong,” Freiburg coach Christian Streich said.
Eintracht Frankfurt took advantage of Freiburg’s misfortune to climb into second place with a 3-0 home win over rock-bottom Schalke 04.

Danish forward Jesper Lindstrom rocketed a strike high into the Schalke goal in the 27th minute for his seventh league goal of the campaign.
Rafael Borre scored a second with less than five minutes remaining, before Aurelio Buta made it three in the second minute of stoppage-time, but Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner was critical of his side.
“I almost liked Schalke’s performance better than what we showed,” Glasner said.
Schalke are now six points adrift of VfB Stuttgart, who occupy the relegation playoff spot, after a ninth defeat in 10 Bundesliga outings.
“We had a lot of scoring chances in the first half, but Frankfurt were ice cold,” Schalke striker Simon Terodde said.
In Saturday’s late game, Cologne fired in five first-half goals to embarrass Werder Bremen 7-1, jumping three places up the table to 10th.
Former Borussia Dortmund striker Steffen Tigges and Tunisia international Ellyes Skhiri scored twice each for Cologne, along with strikes from Linton Maina and Denis Huseinbasic, as well as an own-goal from Bremen’s Marco Friedl.
Germany striker Niclas Fuellkrug pulled one back for Bremen, who have now lost three league matches on the trot for the first time since being promoted back to the Bundesliga this season.
After the match, the Cologne fans were in full voice celebrating their biggest win in 40 years, singing: “Let’s take the lederhosen off those Bavarians” ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Bayern.
Tigges told Sky: “It was a perfect day ... outstanding.”
Elsewhere, Union Berlin fought back to win 3-1 at home against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and move into third, level on points with Frankfurt and fourth-placed Freiburg.
The trio sit five points behind Bayern and one point clear of RB Leipzig.
Union’s American striker Jordan Siebatcheu missed a first-half penalty after Hoffenheim’s Ihlas Bebou handled in the penalty area.
Bebou quickly took advantage himself, scoring just before halftime.
Union centerback Danilho Doekhi equalized in the 73rd minute and found the net again one minute from the end of time, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Young forward Jamie Leweling made sure of the victory in stoppage-time.
VfL Bochum piled more pressure on Hertha BSC with a dominant 3-1 home victory to climb out of the bottom three and push their opponents into the relegation zone.
Bochum have notched three straight wins, while Hertha sit second-from-bottom, one point from safety.
Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying on Saturday crashed out of the BWF All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham, with South Korea’s Se Young-an denying the world No. 3 Tai a chance at a fourth All England title. In a replay of their semi-final showdown last year, the world No. 2 Se again beat Tai, saving four match points in a thrilling deciding game to prevail 17-21, 21-19, 24-22. Tai won the women’s singles title in Birmingham in 2017, 2018 and 2020. In the three times the two superstars faced each other prior to Saturday, Tai, 22, had only come out on top once, when
ON ANOTHER LEVEL: In a pregame speech, Ohtani urged his teammates ‘to throw away their admiration’ for the US, because they ‘came here to surpass them, to reach the top’ Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout had dreamed of this moment, along with millions of fans throughout Japan and the US: the two biggest stars on the planet, longtime teammates, facing each other at 60 feet, 6 inches, the world title at stake. Of course, the count went full on Tuesday night, and Ohtani got Trout to swing under a slider on the outside corner, sealing Japan’s 3-2 win and their first World Baseball Classic (WBC) title since 2009. “This is the best moment in my life,” Ohtani said through a translator. Ohtani, the two-way star who has captivated fans across two continents, was
With cherry blossoms reaching full bloom in Tokyo, Japanese sports fans erupted in jubilation yesterday, after their compatriots defeated the US to win the World Baseball Classic (WBC). More than a hundred people gathered near Shimbashi Station in the city center to get special newspaper editions celebrating the victory. The scene quickly turned chaotic, with police officers jumping in to help hand out copies. “I am so proud as a Japanese national,” said Yuji Takeno, a 33-year-old company worker who was among those gathered in Shimbashi. “I also play baseball for leisure and it makes me want to work harder, that’s how
Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday said she struggled to understand the “hate” she encountered in the locker room amid strained relations between some players following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The world No. 2 has previously said she has nothing against Ukrainians and felt bad for them as Moscow’s action rages on. Belarus has been a staging area for the invasion, which Moscow calls a “special military operation.” “It was really tough for me because I’ve never faced that much hate in the locker room,” Sabalenka said ahead of the Miami Open. “There are a lot of haters on Instagram when you’re losing
