Lionel Messi scored two goals and set up two more to lead Barcelona’s 4-1 win over crosstown rivals RCD Espanyol, who finished a hot-tempered Copa del Rey clash with nine men on Wednesday.
Felipe Caicedo grabbed Espanyol a ninth-minute lead at the Camp Nou, but Messi hit right back four minutes later.
The star forward put the hosts ahead with an unstoppable free-kick just before halftime and assisted Gerard Pique soon after the interval.

Messi then set up Neymar for the fourth goal after Espanyol’s Hernan Perez and Papakouly Diop were sent off, and Caicedo and Marco Asensio were lost to injury.
Espanyol, who held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw in La Liga on Saturday, are to host the return leg of the round-of-16 tie at their stadium next week.
Athletic Bilbao scored three times in the second half to erase a two-goal deficit and beat Villarreal 3-2, while Valencia, Sevilla and RC Deportivo de La Coruna all secured victories.
Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal, used as a substitute, debuted for Barcelona, after the club completed its ban on new players for breaking FIFA’s rules regarding the transfer of youth players.
Espanyol found their opener when Caicedo used an excellent first touch before slotting in a ball he received from Asensio, who started a counterattack by intercepting Dani Alves’ pass.
However, Messi quickly responded when he caught Espanyol’s defense off-balance, after Andres Iniesta played him forward, to beat goalkeeper Pau Lopez.
Caicedo went down holding his left thigh near halftime, but the visitors’ defense held firm until Messi sent his free-kick streaking in off the underside of the crossbar.
Espanyol’s hopes took another blow when Asensio was substituted after he apparently picked up an injury during the halftime warm-up.
It was all Barcelona the rest of the way, as Messi set up Pique to tap in his goal after Iniesta’s incisive pass started the move.
Tempers flared as the game dragged on, with Messi, Neymar and Suarez receiving yellow cards, along with eight for Espanyol.
Perez’s second booking was followed by Diop seeing red for something he apparently said to Suarez in the 75th minute. The undermanned Espanyol resisted until Messi flipped the ball forward for Neymar to convert.
Bilbao fell behind at home after Villarreal scored twice on counterattacks, finished off by Leo Baptistao and Samuel Garcia respectively. However, Benat Etxebarria set up Inaki Williams to pull one back and striker Aritz Aduriz soon leveled, with Aymeric Laporte completing the comeback in the 81st minute.
“It is a deceptive result,” said Aduriz, who scored his 22nd goal in 30 games across all competitions. “It looks like we won, but it is going to be very tough to make it hold up at their ground.”
Gary Neville also got his first win as Valencia coach over a topflight team after Alvaro Negredo scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 rout of Granada.
Valencia are still without a win through four La Liga matches under Neville, and had previously beaten only a third-division team in the Copa del Rey since the former Manchester United player took charge.
Sevilla took a 2-0 lead from their victory at Real Betis Balompie in a one-sided Seville derby, while Deportivo needed defender Alberto Lopo to head in a late equalizer to claim an away-goal advantage from their 1-1 draw at second-division club CD Mirandes.
Atletico Madrid visited crosstown rivals Rayo Vallecano de Madrid in a match that ended 1-1.
Bologna on Thursday advanced past Empoli to reach their first Coppa Italia final in more than half a century. Thijs Dallinga’s 87th-minute header earned Bologna a 2-1 win and his side advanced 5-1 on aggregate. Giovanni Fabbian opened the scoring for Bologna with a header seven minutes in. Then Viktor Kovalenko equalized for Empoli in the 30th minute by turning in a rebound to finish off a counterattack. Bologna won the first leg 3-0. In the May 14 final in Rome, Bologna are to face AC Milan, who eliminated city rivals Inter 4-1 on aggregate following a 3-0 win on Wednesday. Bologna last reached the
If the Wild finally break through and win their first playoff series in a decade, Minnesota’s top line likely will be the reason. They were all over the Golden Knights through the first two games of their NHL Western Conference quarter-finals series, which was 1-1 going back to Minnesota for Game 3 today. The Wild tied the series with a 5-2 win on Tuesday. Matt Boldy had three goals and an assist in the first two games, while Kirill Kaprizov produced two goals and three assists. Joel Eriksson Ek, who centers the line, has yet to get on the scoresheet. “I think the biggest
The Minnesota Timberwolves, with so many promising performances spoiled by late mistakes fresh in their memory bank, sure timed this strong finish well. Jaden McDaniels scored a career playoff-high 30 points and spearheaded Minnesota’s stifling defense on an ailing Luka Doncic, and the Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-104 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday night. “Jaden never looks tired. He looks like he could play 48 minutes,” said teammate Anthony Edwards, who had 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Julius Randle added 22 points for the Wolves, who outscored
From a commemorative jersey to a stadium in his name, Argentine soccer organizers are planning a slew of tributes to their late “Captain” Pope Francis, eulogized as the ultimate team player. Tributes to the Argentine pontiff, a lifelong lover of the game, who died on Monday at the age of 88, have been peppered with soccer metaphors in his homeland. “Francisco. What a player,” the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) said, describing the first pope from Latin America and the southern hemisphere as a generational talent who “never hogged the ball” and who showed the world “the importance of having an Argentine captain,
