Some of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) biggest Cuban-born stars put dozens of boys through batting, pitching and catching drills in a sunny Havana ballpark on Wednesday as part of a three-day mission meant to warm relations between the US league and the baseball-mad nation.
Among the teachers at Wednesday’s clinic were Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, St Louis Cardinals catcher Brayan Pena and Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu — defectors who were once reviled by Cuban officials for abandoning the communist-run country, but who have returned in triumph following last year’s historic detente between the Cold War foes.
“We’re going to give our best on this visit and we appreciate the opportunity we’ve been given,” said Puig, who left Cuba illegally in 2012. “Everything else we leave to God and destiny.”

The return of the defectors on Tuesday was a landmark in the new relationship between Cuba and the US and a dramatic manifestation of Cuba’s shifting attitude toward the hundreds of players who fled the country that trained them.
Joined by pitcher Pedro Luis Lazo and other Cuban baseball players who have stayed on the island, the major league stars divided the 10 and 11-year-olds into five groups and ran them through calisthenics and drills, offering them advice.
Eleven-year-old Yassel Veranes grinned widely as he waited for the clinic to begin.
“It’s my dream to be here to see them,” said the boy, who was brought to Havana’s Estadio Latinoamericano by his father.
The visit is possible thanks to last December’s announcement by US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro that their countries were restoring diplomatic ties, opening the door for better baseball relations. The two nations have always shared a love for the game, despite their differences.
From the Negro Leagues to the current crop of Cuban stars, the island and the US are linked by century-old baseball ties.
During their current trip, Major League Baseball Players Association executives planned to talk business with their Cuban counterparts, saying they were optimistic about sealing a deal by early next year for the Tampa Bay Rays to play two spring training games in Cuba. They also hope to make progress toward creating a legal route for Cuban players to make their way to the major leagues.
“There’s some hurdles to negotiate, there’s no question, and hopefully this trip of goodwill will make the conversations work better,” Major League Baseball chief baseball officer Joe Torre said.
When they were not getting tips or training, the boys asked their idols to sign baseballs, or have their photograph taken together.
Pena, dressed in his St Louis team jersey, said he was happy “to come back to see my family [and] to share with them.”
The player said he also enjoyed meeting with his young fans in Havana. Another clinic was planned for yesterday in Matanzas, east of the capital.
Traditionally, Cuban state television has avoided airing games featuring defectors, but fans watch their idols’ performances on pirated recordings distributed on computer USB drives.
US teams played spring training games in Cuba before former Cuban president Fidel Castro’s revolution, but none appeared from March 1959 until the Baltimore Orioles faced Cuba’s national team in Havana in March 1999. MLB has not returned since.
SSC Napoli’s Italian Serie A title hopes suffered a late setback on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, setting up a thrilling season finale with closest rivals Inter just one point behind. The hosts remain top with 78 points, holding a slim lead over Inter, who won 2-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, with two rounds remaining. To make matters worse for Napoli, midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, struggling with an ankle injury, was forced off just minutes after the match began. Scott McTominay delivered a perfect pass into the box where Romelu Lukaku got
Harry Kane opened the scoring ahead of lifting his first career silverware as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-0, with veteran Thomas Mueller playing his last home game for the club. Bayern officially won the title on May 4 when defending champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg, but were presented with the Bundesliga shield in front of their home fans at full-time. Dripping wet after being showered with beer by teammates, Kane said the title win was “an incredible feeling,” and hoped it would be “the first of many.” “It’s been lot of hard work, a lot of
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
