Serie A leaders Inter eased through to the Coppa Italia quarter-finals by beating Cagliari 3-0, while third-tier side US Alessandria also advanced after upsetting Genoa 2-1 on Tuesday.
Rodrigo Palacio, Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic scored at the San Siro to set up a quarter-final against SSC Napoli or Hellas Verona.
Alessandria — who beat Serie A side US Citta di Palermo in the previous round — became the first third-tier side to reach the quarter-finals in 32 years.

Alessandria had to play the final 15 minutes and all of extra-time with 10 men after Gianni Manfrin went off injured when they had already made three substitutions.
Genoa fan Manuel Marras scored the opener as well as setting up Riccardo Bocalon’s 114th-minute winner.
“I have been a Genoa fan since birth. My father is Genoese, I played for Genoa [youth team], but I celebrated because after a goal you have to celebrate. I am with Alessandria, but I will always carry Genoa in my heart,” Marras said.
“With grit, sacrifice and team spirit, you can play anyone anywhere. The coach [Angelo Gregucci] is instilling in us a winning mentality. He has united the group and we owe a great part of this to him,” he added.
Leonardo Pavoletti headed in Diego Perotti’s free-kick in stoppage-time to force extra-time.
In Milan, Inter took the lead in the first half when Palacio turned a deflected Juan Jesus cross into an empty net.
Cagliari could have equalized early in the second half when Fabio Pisacane’s glancing header crashed off the base of the left post.
Brozovic all but sealed the match with 20 minutes to go with a stunning strike from outside the area into the far corner, giving young goalkeeper Alessio Cragno no chance.
The midfielder was instrumental in the third goal, too, with an effort that came off the right post, and the rebound was turned in by Perisic.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Connelly Early on Tuesday struck out 11 in five shutout innings to match a franchise record during his MLB debut against the Oakland Athletics. “Pretty sick performance,” teammate Romy Gonzalez said. “It was fun to watch.” The only other Red Sox starter to rack up 11 strikeouts in his first career game was Don Aase versus the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26, 1977. “It was amazing, just to go out there and have that first opportunity,” Early said after getting the win in a 6-0 victory. “A long day of travel yesterday and just getting to the field, seeing

‘DEVASTATED’: Argentina’s win was a reversal of their 28-24 defeat last week, with Australian forward Fraser McReight adding that ‘we did the same thing last week’ Argentina flyhalf Santiago Carreras punished an undisciplined Australia with 23 points off the tee as the Pumas held on grimly for a 28-26 win in Sydney yesterday to breathe new life into their Rugby Championship campaign. A try-fest beckoned in afternoon sunshine at Sydney Football Stadium, but Argentina needed only one through captain Julian Montoya, with Carreras doing the damage with seven penalties and a conversion in front of a sell-out crowd. A week after letting a 14-point lead slip in a 28-24 defeat to Australia in Townsville, Argentina saw most of a 21-point advantage erased in the final quarter as the
China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper on Monday published an essay about Chinese basketball it said was written by LeBron James, but a representative for the NBA star said on Thursday that the article was based on a series of interviews. The paper, better known as the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, had said James authored the essay, “Basketball is a Bridge that Connects Us,” a tribute to Chinese players and fans of the sport written in the first person. “LeBron James Pens an Article in the People’s Daily,” read a post published on the newspaper’s official WeChat account.
