Colon in hospital after fight
Boxer Prichard Colon on Sunday was fighting for his life after sustaining an illegal blow to the head during a bout in a Washington suburb, the fight’s promoter said. The super welterweight from Puerto Rico was injured during his 10-round fight with Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia, on Saturday, promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement. Colon, 23, showed symptoms of head trauma in his dressing room following his bout and was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, DiBella said. Colon remained in critical condition on Sunday, DiBella added.

Odom improving: reports
Lamar Odom, the two-time NBA champion and reality TV star left fighting for his life after a brothel binge, continues to improve in a Las Vegas hospital, US media reported on Sunday. The 35-year-old remained in the intensive care unit at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center with serious medical concerns. However, E! News, without citing its source, reported on its Web site that Odom had shown he could swallow — a sign of neurological function — and had been helped out of bed and into a chair for the first time since he was admitted on Tuesday last week. Odom regained consciousness on Friday and offered his first words since he was found unconscious at the Love Ranch brothel outside Las Vegas on Tuesday. Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly said officers who responded to an emergency call were told Odom had used cocaine and sexual performance enhancer supplements in a multiday stay at the brothel.

Samuels reported again
West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has been reported for bowling with a suspect action for a third time in his career, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said yesterday. The part-time spinner was cited after the first Test against Sri Lanka, which the home side won by an innings and six runs in Galle on Saturday. Samuels, 34, will need to undergo testing within 14 days and would be permitted to continue bowling until the results come out, the ICC said. Samuels has already served a near-four year ban from bowling from 2008 over concerns with his action, but was allowed to resume in 2011 after remedial work. He was reported again following a Test in India in 2013 and subsequently banned from bowling his quicker deliveries, but has been allowed to continue with his standard off-break.

Wests Tigers fire Lodge
Australian National Rugby League strugglers Wests Tigers yesterday fired forward Matthew Lodge after he was arrested in New York for allegedly assaulting a man and stalking two women. The 20-year-old is accused of following the two women home to an apartment block on Friday last week and telling them: “This is the night that you die,” the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Wests Tigers immediately terminated his contract, with chief executive Justin Pascoe saying the Sydney-based club would not tolerate such behavior. It is alleged that Lodge followed the women into an apartment after they were let into the building by a male resident, the Herald said. He is then accused of assaulting the man and damaging the apartment, and faces charges including criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, assault and menacing. The incident comes just months after Lodge was granted bail on domestic violence allegations in Australia.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
Taiwanese badminton superstar Lee Yang broke down in tears after publicly retiring from the sport on Sunday. The two-time Olympic gold medalist held a retirement ceremony at the Taipei Arena after the final matches of the Taipei Open. Accompanied by friends, family and former badminton partners, Lee burst into tears while watching a video celebrating key moments in his professional sporting career that also featured messages from international players such as Malaysia’s Teo Ee Yi, Hong Kong’s Tang Chun-man, and Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. “I hope that in the future when the world thinks about me, they will
If all goes well when the biggest marathon field ever gathered in Australia races 42km through the streets of Sydney on Sunday, World Marathon Majors (WMM) will soon add a seventh race to the elite series. The Sydney Marathon is to become the first race since Tokyo in 2013 to join long-established majors in New York, London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago if it passes the WMM assessment criteria for the second straight year. “We’re really excited for Sunday to arrive,” race director Wayne Larden told a news conference in Sydney yesterday. “We’re prepared, we’re ready. All of our plans look good on
When details from a scientific experiment that could have helped clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva landed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the leader of the organization’s reaction was unequivocal: “We have to stop that urgently,” he wrote. No mention of the test ever became public and Valieva’s defense at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) went on without it. What effect the information could have had on Valieva’s case is unclear, but without it, the skater, then 15 years old, was eventually disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for a banned heart medication that would later
