Wayne Rooney will have an opportunity to break Bobby Charlton’s 45-year-old England goal-scoring record when he lines up against San Marino in today’s UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier in Serravalle.
The England captain, 29, equaled Gary Lineker’s tally of 48 goals with a late winner in a 3-2 success away to Slovenia in June, which left him one goal below Charlton’s mark of 49.
A brace at the tiny Stadio Olimpico would give him the record outright, while an England victory — which is widely expected — would see Roy Hodgson’s side qualify from Group E with three games to spare.

“Hopefully, he can break the record on this trip,” said Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, who is a candidate to partner Rooney in attack. “He is an incredible talent, a world-class player, and trains very hard to be where he is. It is great to be able to train with him, talk to him and learn from him. He is an all-round top player and top man.”
Both Kane and Rooney are yet to score in the English Premier League this season, but although the Manchester United man is without a league goal since April, he claimed a classy hat-trick at Club Brugge KV in a UEFA Champions League playoff last week.
With an aggregate score of 31-1 in their five previous meetings with San Marino, ranked 193rd in the world, victory for England is all but inevitable and it would be enough to take them to France.
England could conceivably finish level on points with Slovenia and Switzerland even if they win, but their results against those two teams would give them the edge in a three-way head-to-head tie.
While the match promises little in the way of sporting intrigue, it will give Hodgson an opportunity to look at some of the players on the fringes of his team as his side look to preserve their 100 percent record in qualifying.
Kieran Gibbs and Luke Shaw are vying to replace the injured Leighton Baines at leftback, while a new midfield configuration will need to be found in the absence of Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson.
One player hoping for a chance to shine is Jonjo Shelvey, who has been brought back into the fold after some strong early-season displays for Swansea City.
It is three years since he won his only cap to date, which also came against San Marino, and the former Liverpool midfielder is eager to seize the opportunity.
“It seems every time I get called up we are playing San Marino, but I just want to get a start, hopefully I can, and then it is down to me to cement a place in this squad,” Shelvey said earlier this week.
In attack, with Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck — England’s top scorer in qualifying — sidelined, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott might be offered an opportunity to play in his preferred central role.
Having lost 8-0 on England’s last visit, in March 2013, San Marino’s main objective will be keeping the score respectable, but England fans of a certain age will remember all too well the uncomfortable 20 minutes that elapsed after Davide Gualteri opened the scoring after only 8.3 seconds in a World Cup qualifier between the teams in Bologna, Italy, in November 1993 — a tournament record that still stands.
After equalizing through Paul Ince in the 21st minute, England eventually won 7-1, but it was not enough to secure them a place at the FIFA World Cup finals and remains an unpleasant memory.
San Marino will also draw hope from the fact they held Estonia to a 0-0 draw in their previous home game in November last year, which was the first time they had avoided defeat in 60 home European Championship qualifiers.
England then host Switzerland on Tuesday, while San Marino visit Lithuania.
Freddie Freeman homered and drove in four runs, Shohei Ohtani also went deep and Roki Sasaki earned his first major league win as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday night for their seventh straight victory. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the series to improve to 5-0 against Atlanta this year. Los Angeles’ three-game sweep at home early in the season left the Braves 0-7. Sasaki allowed three runs and six hits over five innings. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up a home run to Ozzie Albies, but received plenty of offensive support in his
INTER AWAIT: Superb saves by PSG ’keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inspired the victory, as Arsenal were punished for misses, including one by Bukayo Saka Arsenal on Wednesday fell short on the big stage again as their painful UEFA Champions League semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain left Mikel Arteta to rue his club’s failure to provide him with enough attacking options. Arteta’s side were unable to reach the Champions League final for the first time in 19 years as PSG clinched a tense 2-1 win at Parc des Princes. Trailing 1-0 from last week’s first leg in London, the Gunners made a blistering start to the second leg, but could not convert their chances as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s superb saves inspired PSG’s 3-1 aggregate victory. Arsenal were punished for
Bayern Munich on Sunday were crowned German champions for the 34th time, giving striker Harry Kane his first major trophy, after second-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 2-2 at SC Freiburg. Bayern’s 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday, when the Bavarians came from two goals down to take the lead before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, meant defending Bundesliga champions Leverkusen needed to win at Freiburg to delay the title party. Leverkusen were two goals down before scoring twice in the final 10 minutes, but Xabi Alonso’s side could not find a third, as Bayern reclaimed the title at the first attempt after
THRILLER: Raphinha gave Barca a 3-2 lead with two minutes remaining of regular time, but Francesco Acerbi equalized the game in the second minute of added time Davide Frattesi on Tuesday fired Inter into the UEFA Champions League final with an extra-time winner that gave the Italians a stunning 4-3 triumph over Barcelona, 7-6 on aggregate. Italy midfielder Frattesi won a tie for the ages under a downpour in Milan when he lashed home in the 99th minute, sending a packed and rocking San Siro wild with joy. Simone Inzaghi’s team will face either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this month in Munich, Germany, where they would feel they have a great chance to be crowned kings of Europe for a fourth time after
