Taiwan cruised past Macau in the opener of the 2013 East Asia Basketball Association Championship, trouncing the Gamblers 108-32 in Incheon, South Korea, yesterday afternoon.
Taiwan brought a strong game to the unfancied underdogs, opening the first quarter with a 28-9 lead and following that up with a 24-4 run in the second quarter to claim a 52-13 advantage at the half.
The rout continued in the third quarter, with coach Hsu Jin-tseh (Pure Youth Construction) giving his reserve players plenty of floor time in the interest of conserving the starters for today’s showdown against the hosts as Taiwan padded their lead en route to a 76-point victory.
Speedy guard Chang Tsong-hsien made the most of his starting role on the national team by downing a game-high 28 points to lead Taiwan.
Lin Chin-bang followed with 17 in a game in which four different Taiwanese players reached double digits.
Held to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters, Macau never had a chance against the Taiwanese.
They coughed up the ball 36 times and shot less than 25 percent from the field in a game that was over before the final buzzer sounded.
Next up for Taiwan is a tough battle against hosts South Korea, with the winner likely to earn a top-two finish in Group A. Tip-off time is scheduled for 2pm local time.
