“Good morning, girls,” Igor Fuchs exclaimed as he greeted his students at the start of English class in the southeastern Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.
However, this is no ordinary crowd and curriculum: For the most part it is focused on sex props.
Fuchs teaches English to prostitutes so they can give a warmer welcome to tens of thousands of soccer fans headed to the city for next month’s Confederations Cup, as well as next year’s World Cup.

The city’s 80,000 sex workers are counting on brisk business as authorities predict 40,000 tourists will be in town next month for a total of three matches from June 15 to June 30, before 140,000 are expected to follow for next year’s World Cup.
With that in mind, the Association of Prostitutes has been offering free English classes to its members at a local mall since March.
“We teach basic expressions, but also have demonstrations with erotic paraphernalia so they can learn the names, how to use them and propose them,” said Fuchs, a volunteer who also teaches Spanish and French.
The goal, says association president Cida Vieira, is to provide prostitutes with communication skills to keep clients who do not speak Portuguese happy — both during the upcoming sports extravaganzas and beyond.
“We deal with gringos [foreign men] daily on the streets and in discos,” Vieira said. “We want to train the girls so they can better serve them.”
So far, 300 prostitutes have signed up.
Attendance is irregular and older women, like 55-year-old Maria Aparecida, who has been in the business for almost three decades, tend to come to class more often than others.
“I have always wanted to speak English,” she said. “I raised my kids by doing this job.”
Demand is definitely there — on both sides of the booming sex trade.
“Tourists are going to flock here and those who come from abroad like to spend,” said 26-year-old Vitoria, clad in a pink mini dress as she waited for work at one of many sex motels on busy Guaicurus Street.
On average, she sees 20 customers a day in her tiny room, with 15-minute sessions costing between US$10 and US$25.
Some of the women view learning English as a way of securing their livelihood down the road.
“It’s important to speak English because one day I will quit prostitution to find another job and another language will help,” Vitoria said.
However, not all are sold on the need to speak English — or any other foreign language for that matter.
“I have never had American or French clients,” said Yasmin, a transvestite, as he showed off some deft samba moves on Avenida Afonso Pena, before rushing to negotiate with a client in a waiting car.
“I know basic words such as ‘good morning’ and ‘condom,’” 31-year-old Juliana said. “For the rest, I get by with gestures. All men are the same. They come for the same thing. No need for words.”
Belo Horizonte is not the only Brazilian city taking steps to beef up its sex industry ahead of the World Cup, which will be followed by the 2016 Olympic Games.
A shortage of hotel rooms has led authorities in Rio de Janeiro to invest millions of dollars to convert raunchy motels to accommodate the legions of tourists expected for the events.
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg was called for a foul while defending against Peyton Watson and turned the ankle as he fell to the floor with 6 minutes, 1 second left in the second quarter. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
Yassine Bounou on Wednesday saved two penalties, while Youssef en-Nesyri netted the decisive spot-kick as hosts Morocco secured a 4-2 shoot-out victory over Nigeria following a 0-0 draw in a tense Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Rabat. Morocco, seeking their first continental title in 50 years, are to face 2021 winners Senegal in Sunday’s decider in Rabat, while Nigeria take on Egypt in the third-place playoff tomorrow. The 120 minutes before the shoot-out had few clear-cut chances for either side, but it was Morocco who created more opportunities, although they were denied by some fine saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
