Tottenham Hotspur celebrated the return of manager Harry Redknapp with a comfortable 2-0 win over Aston Villa which lifted them to third in the Premier League on Monday.
Emmanuel Adebayor struck twice in the first half as Spurs won for the eighth time in nine league matches to move on to 25 points, nine behind leaders Manchester City and four adrift of Manchester United.
Spurs climbed above Newcastle United, also on 25 points, on goal-difference and they have a game in hand on the teams around them.

Redknapp, 64, back in the dugout after missing two games following minor heart surgery, watched his side dominate the match from start to finish.
“It was great to be back tonight and I felt absolutely fine. I enjoy watching us play football and the best medicine for me is to see the way we played, we dominated the game from start to finish,” Redknapp told reporters. “We played some great stuff, had clearcut chances before the first goal went in and in the second half had more chances to kill the game off, but I always thought we were in control.”
“Luka Modric and Scott Parker were outstanding in midfield, and Younes Kaboul is turning into the player I always thought he could be, his heading was outstanding and we looked assured at the back,” he said.

Asked if he thought Spurs had a chance of winning the title, he said he would be happy to finish in the top four and reclaim a Champions League place.
“I don’t know about the title, but if we can make the top four again I would be delighted, but it’s going to be tight — Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle are all doing well and it’s going to be tight,” he said.
Villa manager Alex McLeish blamed calamitous defending for the goals his side conceded.
“We didn’t tackle well, we didn’t pass it enough or play well enough,” McLeish said.
Adebayor, looking for his first goal in seven games, had a great chance to put Spurs ahead after 11 minutes, but he headed wide of Shay Given’s goal when it looked easier to score.
He made amends three minutes later when Villa managed to clear a corner, but only as far Gareth Bale, who sent the ball back into the box where Adebayor acrobatically reacted first to give Spurs the lead with an overhead kick.
Apart from a first-minute half chance that fell to Emile Heskey and a cross-shot from the former England striker, Spurs totally dominated and it was no real surprise when they doubled their lead.
The Villa defense failed to clear a ball from the left whipped in by Bale and Adebayor stabbed the ball into the empty net after poor defending by James Collins and Richard Dunne.
That goal meant that Spurs had scored at least two in each of their last nine league matches and it could have been worse for Villa at the break, with Bale, Kaboul and Kyle Walker all going close.
The second half followed the same pattern, with former Spurs striker Darren Bent forcing former Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel into a good save in the 47th minute, before Spurs laid siege to the Villa goal without adding a third.
Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday fought through a second-set slump to post a roller-coaster 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Damir Dzumhur in his opening match at the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard, playing his first tournament since losing to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final, raced through the first set, but completely lost his way in the second, dropping his serve twice against the 33-year-old Bosnian. Alcaraz regained his intensity and cut down his errors in the third set as a seventh ace took him to a match point that was converted when Dzumhur fired wide. “It was just a roller coaster,” said the second
Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday led the way into the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals, with Carlos Alcaraz hot on their heels after a straight-sets victory of his own. Sinner shrugged off a mid-match weather delay lasting nearly three hours as he advanced 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) over Adrian Mannarino. Alcaraz, the second seed who has reached the final in his past six tournaments, hammered Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi 6-1, 6-4. After sweeping the opening set in 28 minutes, Alcaraz hit a speed bump, dropping his serve to trail 2-4. He promptly regained the break, then fought through a marathon ninth game
Taiwan’s men’s basketball team on Monday clinched a spot in the FIBA Asia Cup quarter-finals with a 78-64 win over Jordan in Saudi Arabia, securing their best finish in the tournament since placing fourth in 2013. The win was sweet revenge for Taiwan, who were denied a quarter-final spot by Jordan at the same stage of the previous Asia Cup in 2022 after blowing a nine-point lead in the final minute and losing 97-96 on a half-court buzzer-beater. “History is part of the journey,” Taiwan head coach Gianluca Tucci said when asked about the 2022 collapse of the team, who he did
Leicester City on Sunday launched their quest for an immediate return to the English Premier League with a 2-1 win at home to crisis club Sheffield Wednesday after the visitors’ supporters protested against Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri. Wednesday are under several English Football League embargoes for a range of financial breaches, with payments of wages to players and staff delayed for the past three months. Owls fans made their feelings toward Thai businessman Chansiri clear by delaying their entry to their seats and the away end was empty as the players came onto the pitch at the King Power Stadium, with a
