Olympique Lyonnais gave themselves the perfect morale boost for Tuesday’s Champions League home clash with Real Madrid on Friday as they eased to a 4-0 victory over Nancy.
However, while goals from Yoann Gourcuff, Jeremy Pied, Miralem Pjanic and the outstanding Jimmy Briand saw them move into provisional second in the league four points behind Lille, Lyon suffered a major injury blow.
Argentine star Lisandro Lopez is a doubt for the Real match as he suffered a thigh injury on Thursday in training, though the club denied several reports that he had done it kicking a ball in anger at being told he would not start against Nancy.
“He [Lisandro] has a slightly pulled thigh muscle,” Lyon coach Claude Puel said. “He was unable to play here and his ability to play in Tuesday’s match is seriously in doubt.”
Lyon went into the break 1-0 up thanks to Gourcuff’s strike, a super volley from Jeremy Toulalan’s pass which gave Nancy goalkeeper Damien Gregorini no chance.
Gourcuff was a relieved man as earlier in the half he had missed an open goal when he was unselfishly set up by Briand, but with the goal unguarded he sent his shot wide.
Nancy, though, should have been on level terms at halftime, but veteran Moroccan Youssouf Hadji overplayed his penalty taking routine and Lyon goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre, who had been called-up as Hugo Lloris was ill, easily saved to make up for being penalized for bringing down Hadji.
Lyon came out in stirring fashion in the second half looking to wrap up the match as quickly as possible and were denied a second from Bafetembi Gomis in the 51st minute as referee Olivier Thual said he had not blown the whistle to take the free-kick which led to the goal.
Gourcuff was booked for protesting too strongly, but the incident didn’t appear to distract Lyon. They were again close to adding to their advantage in the 56th minute, but Gregorini managed to tip Briand’s effort on to the post and much to his relief the ball then rolled along the line and he was able to gather it.
However, the hosts got a deserved second goal 20 minutes later when Pied headed home -Brazilian star Michel Bastos’ cross and Pjanic ensured the three points six minutes after replacing Gourcuff.
The Serbian playmaker rounded off a fine move which had seen the ever industrious Toulalan regain possession inside his half, then find Briand, whose pass set up Pjanic and he planted a delightfully directed shot past a static Gregorini into the far corner.
Briand then deservedly got a goal of his own and a memorable one at that with a stunning overhead kick that rocketed into the top of the goal and had Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas doing high fives with his friends in the stands.
“We had to be fully focused for this match,” Puel said. “We didn’t play within ourselves this evening and that was what was necessary. The win was both beautiful and interesting.”

Spain starlets Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams dazzled on Thursday as La Roja beat France 5-4 in a thriller in Stuttgart, Germany, to set up a UEFA Nations League final with Portugal. Yamal bagged a brace, while Williams scored and provided an assist as the two wingers cut France’s makeshift defense to ribbons. Mikel Merino and Pedri were also on the score sheet for the UEFA Euro 2024 champions. Kylian Mbappe netted a second-half penalty, but Spain were 5-1 up and cruising, before Les Bleus suddenly woke up as their opponents took their foot off the pedal. France’s three late goals — a
Italy crashed to a 3-0 loss away to Norway, as the four-time FIFA World Cup champions made a disastrous start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday, while Belgium had to settle for a draw in North Macedonia. Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa and Erling Haaland all scored in the first half in pouring rain in Oslo as Norway made it a night to forget for Italy, who missed out on the past two World Cups. “I have no explanation. Our supporters don’t deserve this kind of match. We need to do some soul-searching. It’s unacceptable,” Italy captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi
The Crusaders yesterday produced a clinical performance in difficult conditions to beat the Queensland Reds 32-12 and claim home advantage in next week’s Super Rugby semi-finals. Lock Scott Barrett and prop Tamaiti Williams scored first-half tries to reward an outstanding performance from the Crusaders’ forwards in wet, slippery conditions and bitterly cold temperatures. Scrumhalf Noah Hotham defied the conditions in the second half to score a superb solo try and, after kicking a conversion and penalty to make the score 22-0 at the hour mark, flyhalf Rivez Reihana scored a try which took the game beyond the Reds. “Typical Christchurch weather, cold, wet
