Serie A leaders Inter were the big winners without kicking a ball on Saturday as their two nearest title challengers AS Roma and AC Milan drew 0-0 at the capital’s Stadio Olimpico.
Earlier in the day, Juventus had gone fourth after Fabio Grosso’s winner gave them a 2-1 success at freefalling Fiorentina, but the big game happened in Rome, where both teams were hoping to close in on the champions and establish themselves as Inter’s main rivals.
Milan coach Leonardo said he felt his side had deserved to win, but insisted they are in good shape to try and overturn their 3-2 Champions League deficit against Manchester United this week.

“I think the team possibly deserved a little more, particularly after the break. With all respect to Roma, we’re a little bitter that we didn’t win,” he said. “I have great faith in this team, many times I’ve asked a lot of them. We believe in ourselves, we have to win well at Old Trafford and we’ll go there trying to score goals.”
The single point moved Milan three points behind their city rivals, with Roma three more further back, but Inter had a game in hand at home to Genoa yesterday.
Roma coach Claudio Ranieri as good as admitted he was not holding out any hope of catching Inter.
“It was a difficult game, we knew it would be. I’m very satisfied with how we played against Milan,” he said. “I’ve never said we want to win [the title], we just want to do well right to the end.”
The tension of the occasion seemed to get to them in a game of little flowing play and few chances. Given that both sides had more to lose than gain, the first half was a predictably tight affair.
Roma started well and went close when Daniele De Rossi shot narrowly wide and Julio Baptista forced Cristian Abiatti into a smart save.
After the break, however, Milan played with renewed determination and gradually started to dictate things without creating many clear cut chances.
Marco Borriello had one after a slip by centerback Juan, but chose to shoot from a tight angle rather than squaring to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Nicolas Burdisso blocked his effort.
Roma, though, still had chances on the break and 16 minutes from time, Montenegro forward Mirko Vucinic headed John-Arne Riise’s cross narrowly wide.
Ronaldinho then came even closer for the visitors with a header from substitute David Beckham’s pin-point right-wing center.
In Florence, Fiorentina suffered the worst possible preparation for their Champions League second leg clash at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, a tie in which they trail 2-1 from the first game in Germany.
La Viola have now only won one of their last nine league games, losing six, and sit down in 10th place. They are also nine points behind fourth-placed Juventus.
Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli urged his team to put substance over style.
“Sometimes we need to think more about the result than playing pretty football, sometimes you need to know how to be more clinical, otherwise you don’t get results,” he said.
For Juve, it was the perfect way to bounce back following last week’s 2-0 home defeat to Palermo.
Juve were off to a flying start, ahead through Diego after just 2 minutes in contentious circumstances. Antonio Candreva played a clever ball in behind the Fiorentina defense, with Diego looking offside, but he sold goalkeeper Sebastien Frey two clever feints, leaving the Frenchman sprawled on the floor, allowing the Brazilian to round him and roll the ball into an empty net.
Fiorentina equalized on 32 minutes, but it was because of woeful Juve defending.
Massimo Gobbi sent a cross-field ball from left to right, Juve fullback Paolo De Ceglie dithered and Manninger left it too late to come for the ball, allowing Marco Marchionni, the smallest player on the pitch, to nip between the pair and head home from close range against his former club.
The winner came on 68 minutes when substitute Grosso overlapped down the left, took a pass from Mali midfielder Mohamed Sissoko in the box and curled a shot from an angle high and beyond Frey’s reach.

The Taiwanese pair won the final 21-18, 21-12, marking the duo’s second title this year after their win at the BWF Super 300 Taipei Open in May. The match on Sunday was their first encounter with the Japanese duo, ranked No. 63 in the world. Hsieh and Hung, ranked No. 12, began the opening game well. Hung, who plays left-handed, performed strongly at both the net and the
Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarter-finals. “Your support was incredible,” Mboko told the crowd in French after a chorus of “Ole, Ole, Ole” chants echoed around the venue. “I’m really happy to win today ... It’s incredible. I’m so happy to beat such a great champion.” Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults on Saturday after having 23 in
Jobe Bellingham on Tuesday admitted to having “anxieties” on following in brother Jude’s footsteps after joining Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Jobe Bellingham, 19, is two years younger than Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid in 2023 after three years at Dortmund. A centerpiece of the England national team, Jude Bellingham has emerged as one of the best players in the world in recent seasons. The younger Jobe Bellingham joined Dortmund in June from Sunderland after their promotion to the English Premier League. He admitted he understood what the perception would be ahead of the move to Germany. “It’s something you do think about.
Before Tuesday’s 7-2 win at the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested “most people couldn’t tell you five players on our team.” A look at the standings would indicate more Brewers players soon will be recognized by more fans. After all, it is difficult to overlook a team that not only continues to extend their lead in the National League Central, but also boasts the best record in the majors. “What we’re doing in here right now is special,” right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta said after allowing only four hits and one run in five innings, while setting a career high with
