Juan Martin Del Potro reached the US Open semi-finals on Thursday and then sat back and watched as the quarter-final between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Gonzalez was suspended in the third set because of rain.
The sixth-seeded Argentine converted eight out of eight break points to reach the last four with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Marin Cilic of Croatia.
In a battle between two giant 20-year-olds, sixth-seeded Del Potro started slowly before wresting control of the match away from Cilic midway through the second set.

He finished with a flourish to reach his second Grand Slam semi-final of the year after his five-set loss to Roger Federer at the French Open in June.
“It was a good comeback, you know, the crowd cheering for me at 1-3 in the second. I started to play better after that moment,” Del Potro said. “Of course, I need to improve for the semis a lot, but I’m happy with my match and with the result.”
Del Potro has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks over since he emerged in 2006 from the tennis center of Tandil, which also produced Mariano Zabaleta and Juan Monaco.
He was the youngest player in the year-end top 200 in 2005, the youngest in the top 100 in 2006, the youngest in the top 50 in 2007 and the youngest in the top 10 last year.
This year, he broke into the top five in April and was ranked there for three months before slipping out to his current sixth position.
Del Potro enjoyed a good summer buildup to Flushing Meadows, winning in Washington and reaching the final in the Montreal Masters before running out of steam against Andy Murray.
He came into New York well-rested, however, having taken the next two weeks off and ready for what he has designated as his main target of the year.
“I like to play here in US and I like hard courts. I like this tournament. I like everything. So, I work hard for this part of the year,” Del Potro said. “My dream is to win this tournament. I’m so close to doing it, but now I am focusing on the semis. Both players so tough for me and they will want to win like me.”
Del Potro, though, will have to wait a while longer to find out who his semi-final opponent will be after the first rain of the fortnight forced the suspension of the day’s second semi-final with Nadal leading 7-6 (7/4), 6-6 and 3-2 in the tie-break, Gonzalez serving.
The Spaniard, though, was in some difficulty with a abdominal strain that had him wincing at times on court and calling for a medical timeout.
Nadal had the same injury problem in his bruising fourth-round match against Gael Monfils and there will be serious doubts over whether he can go the distance.
The match was rescheduled for yesterday along with the women’s semi-finals, but with heavy rain forecast, organizers could be facing a major scheduling headache.
Harry Kane opened the scoring ahead of lifting his first career silverware as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-0, with veteran Thomas Mueller playing his last home game for the club. Bayern officially won the title on May 4 when defending champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg, but were presented with the Bundesliga shield in front of their home fans at full-time. Dripping wet after being showered with beer by teammates, Kane said the title win was “an incredible feeling,” and hoped it would be “the first of many.” “It’s been lot of hard work, a lot of

Bayern Munich on Sunday were crowned German champions for the 34th time, giving striker Harry Kane his first major trophy, after second-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 2-2 at SC Freiburg. Bayern’s 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday, when the Bavarians came from two goals down to take the lead before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, meant defending Bundesliga champions Leverkusen needed to win at Freiburg to delay the title party. Leverkusen were two goals down before scoring twice in the final 10 minutes, but Xabi Alonso’s side could not find a third, as Bayern reclaimed the title at the first attempt after
