Greg Inglis, one of Australia’s highest-profile rugby league players, has been suspended by his club after being charged with assaulting his girlfriend.
Inglis, a 22-year-old five-eighth for Melbourne Storm, was suspended by his club on Monday in another blow for Australia’s top-flight National Rugby League (NRL), which has been rocked by a number of scandals involving players this year.
“The board has tonight made the decision to stand Greg Inglis down for an indefinite period,” Melbourne Storm CEO Brian Waldron said on the club’s Web site.
“The Melbourne Storm is vehemently opposed to any situation that in any way endangers the health, safety and well-being of any woman,” he said.
Australian media reports said the assault had left Inglis’ girlfriend with a black eye.
Inglis was made the poster-boy of the NRL’s million-dollar marketing campaign in March after the previous face of the league, Brett Stewart, was charged with sexual assault of a teenager after an incident at his club’s season launch.
The Melbourne Storm club fired assistant coach and former international Matthew Johns in May after an investigative report named him as a participant in a group sex incident in 2002.

Joel Eriksson Ek, who centers the line, has yet to get on the scoresheet. “I think the biggest

From a commemorative jersey to a stadium in his name, Argentine soccer organizers are planning a slew of tributes to their late “Captain” Pope Francis, eulogized as the ultimate team player. Tributes to the Argentine pontiff, a lifelong lover of the game, who died on Monday at the age of 88, have been peppered with soccer metaphors in his homeland. “Francisco. What a player,” the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) said, describing the first pope from Latin America and the southern hemisphere as a generational talent who “never hogged the ball” and who showed the world “the importance of having an Argentine captain,
