Dinara Safina and Svetlana Kuznetsova set up an all-Russian final with crushing wins at the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament yesterday.
Safina enjoyed her first victory over compatriot Nadia Petrova 6-1, 6-0, while Kuznetsova brushed aside Slovenian qualifier Katarina Srebotnik 7-6 (7/5), 6-2.
Kuznetsova, who beat Serbian top seed Jelena Jankovic in the quarter-finals, got off to a sluggish start by losing her service in the opening game.

But the 2004 US Open champion forced the tie-breaker and cashed in on her second set point with a forehand volley.
Srebotnik, who upset Beijing Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva of Russia on Friday, recovered from a break down in the second set to make it 2-2.
But Kuznetsova reeled off four games in a row and sealed the win on serve on her fourth match point.
“I’m very happy to be in the final. Obviously I was not expecting to do so well as I was very tired coming from the Fed Cup,” said Kuznetsova, who helped Russia beat Spain in the women’s team final a week ago.
However, she said she would need to improve her serving in today’s final after matching her six aces with six double faults.
“My serve has never been very good, so I don’t have expectation on my serve like too many aces,” Kuznetsova said.
Safina, 22, meanwhile savored her first success in six attempts against Petrova.
“There is always first time for everything in your life, so it was my first time to beat her,” Safina said.
When asked about the final against Kuznetsova, she said: “It’s great. We are good friends, so I just hope that we can go out there and play a good match. Let’s see who is going to be stronger tomorrow and win.”

World No. 9 Vera Zvonareva charged into the Guangzhou Open final yesterday with a hard-fought victory over China’s Zheng Jie and will meet another Chinese, Peng Shuai, in the decider.
The Russian top seed, searching for her second title of the season after winning in Prague in May, came through a tough challenge from third seed Zheng, before grinding out a 6-3, 7-5 win.
Zvonareva, who won singles bronze at the Olympics last month and followed it up by helping Russia claim the Fed Cup title earlier this month, now faces Peng, who has never won a WTA Tour title before.
Seeded fourth here, Peng brushed aside France’s Camille Pin 6-2, 6-1.
Freddie Freeman homered and drove in four runs, Shohei Ohtani also went deep and Roki Sasaki earned his first major league win as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday night for their seventh straight victory. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the series to improve to 5-0 against Atlanta this year. Los Angeles’ three-game sweep at home early in the season left the Braves 0-7. Sasaki allowed three runs and six hits over five innings. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up a home run to Ozzie Albies, but received plenty of offensive support in his
Bayern Munich on Sunday were crowned German champions for the 34th time, giving striker Harry Kane his first major trophy, after second-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 2-2 at SC Freiburg. Bayern’s 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday, when the Bavarians came from two goals down to take the lead before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, meant defending Bundesliga champions Leverkusen needed to win at Freiburg to delay the title party. Leverkusen were two goals down before scoring twice in the final 10 minutes, but Xabi Alonso’s side could not find a third, as Bayern reclaimed the title at the first attempt after

A man fell from the 6.4m-high Clemente Wall in right field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh during Wednesday night’s game between the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. Right after Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to put the Pirates ahead 4-3, players began waving frantically for medical personnel and pointing to the man, who had fallen onto the warning track. The fan was tended to for approximately five minutes by members of both the Pirates and Cubs training staffs as well as PNC personnel before being removed from the field on a cart. The team issued a statement shortly
