New Zealand Maori scored two tries to none to beat Samoa 17-6 yesterday and ensure a shot at the Pacific Nations Cup title.
New Zealand Maori have won three from three so far in the Cup and Samoa have lost all three, although they prevented the New Zealanders from totally dominating.
Samoa’s chances were not helped by losing lock Chad Slade for 10 minutes to a yellow card in the first spell and inside center Anitelea Tuilagi in the second half.
The first half was dominated by a grinding contest in the forwards, with Maori enjoying the bulk of both possession and territory.
Maori fly-half Callum Bruce opened the scoring with a penalty after 11 minutes and he kept the momentum going with the first try 16 minutes later.
There was no way through the Samoan defense until Bruce stabbed through a little grubber kick behind the defensive line from about 10m out and he followed up, forcing the ball down just before it reached the dead ball line.
Maori always looked likely to break through again, but the second try came just two minutes before the break.
The classy Messam and Waldrom combined in a burst upfield to put former All Black half-back Piri Weepu in the clear for a try under the posts, although there were suspicions that the final pass was forward. Bruce’s second conversion gave the Maori a comfortable 17-0 halftime lead.
Samoa were the only scorers in the second half, with two well struck penalties to Gavin Williams.
Twelve days after winning her second Grand Slam title at the French Open, Coco Gauff fell at the first hurdle on grass in Berlin on Thursday as beaten Paris finalist Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals. Winner of 10 main tour titles, including the US Open in 2023 and the WTA Finals last year, Gauff has yet to lift a trophy in a grass-court tournament. “After I won the first
Aaron Civale got a little wild in the right-hander’s first start for the Chicago White Sox two days after he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers. Civale on Sunday walked four of the first seven hitters he faced in a 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. The 30-year-old finished with four walks, one off his career high, while allowing six hits and two runs in five innings. He threw 65 strikes and 39 balls. Chicago trailed 2-1 when he was replaced by Dan Altavilla to start the sixth. “Not the cleanest,” Civale said. “It’s been a whirlwind of a week. First couple
Sergio Ramos on Tuesday outfoxed two Inter players and artfully headed home the first goal for Monterrey at the FIFA Club World Cup. The 39-year-old Ramos slipped through the penalty area for the score just as he did for so many years in the shirts of Real Madrid and Spain’s national team, with whom he combined smarts, timing and physicality. Ramos’ clever goal and his overall defensive play at the Rose Bowl were major factors in Monterrey’s impressive 1-1 draw against the UEFA Champions League finalists in the clubs’ first match of the tournament. “There is always a joy to contribute to the
Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka staged a “crazy comeback,” saving four match points before beating Elena Rybakina 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (6) in the quarter-finals of the Berlin Open on Friday. Sabalenka was 6-2 down in the final-set tie-breaker, but won six straight points to reach her eighth semi-final of the season. “Elena is a great player and we’ve had a lot of tough battles,” Sabalenka said. “I have no idea how I was able to win those last points. I think I just got lucky.” “I remember a long time ago when I was just starting, I won a lot of matches being down
