Andreas Ottl completed the rout midway through the second half with a well struck shot from 20m to make it 5-0.
Leverkusen leapfrogged Stuttgart and Hamburg thanks to goals from Rolfes and Stefan Kiessling.
On 41 minutes Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich punched the ball into the path of Rolfes, who volleyed into the unguarded net.
Kiessling made it 2-0 for Leverkusen a minute before break as once again the 19-year-old Ulreich failed to clear.
Rolfes netted his second of the game 20 minutes from time when Matthieu Delpierre’s attempted clearance bounced off his shins and looped over Ulreich.
The victory sees Leverkusen move on to 47 points, ahead of Hamburg on goal difference, who on Saturday slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to struggling MSV Duisburg.
At the lower end of the table, Energie Cottbus beat fellow strugglers Arminia Bielefeld 1-0.
