Goals from Mark Viduka and Michael Owen ended Newcastle United's wretched run of 13 Premier League games without a win as they beat struggling Fulham 2-0 at St James' Park on Saturday.
The result, Newcastle's first win in Kevin Keegan's second spell as their manager after nine games without a victory, eased the Magpies fears of being drawn into the relegation battle.
But defeat left Fulham second-bottom and facing a fight to maintain their top-flight status.

Afterwards a relieved Keegan said: "It will stop people saying `they [Newcastle] haven't won under Kevin Keegan.'"
"When we had to dig in as a team, we stuck together and maybe that's the thing these players have been criticized for in the past," he said. "I can feel a good spirit around the place, we just needed a win to endorse that and we got it."
Keegan praised the contribution of Owen, who like his manager made his reputation as a striker at Liverpool before winning England honors.
"He's been absolutely superb, not just for his goals but for his leadership on the field. He's a great team player," Keegan said.
Australia international Viduka did his best to settle early Newcastle nerves by scoring in the sixth minute.
But the home fans had to endure an anxious wait until Owen wrapped up the points seven minutes from time.
At the other end of the table Everton were left two points behind city rivals Liverpool, having played one more game, in the race for the fourth Champions League place after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United.
Aigeybeni Yakubu opened the scoring in the eighth minute at Goodison Park, before Hammers striker Dean Ashton equalized an hour later.
The result might have been worse for Everton, with teenager Freddie Sears twice denied late on, first by goalkeeper Tim Howard and then, after he'd beaten the US international, by the post.
"I'm disappointed we didn't take all three points, but maybe in the end it was a good point," Everton manager David Moyes said. "It leaves us in fifth place and we gained a point on the teams below us [Portsmouth and Aston Villa]. That's really important."
At Ewood Park, Roque Santa Cruz opened the scoring for Blackburn Rovers in the 12th minute, before Marlon King pulled Wigan Athletic level five minutes later from the penalty spot with his first goal for the club after Christopher Samba was sent-off for a foul on ex-England striker Emile Heskey.
Jason Roberts restored Rovers' lead on the stroke of halftime and then Santa Cruz made it 3-1 after the hour.
Wigan were dealt a further blow when Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Andre Bikey was Reading's hero, the Cameroon center back scoring twice with headers either side of Mauro Zarate's equalizer for Birmingham City.
At the Riverside, Tuncay Sanli's 32nd minute goal was all that separated Middlesbrough from Derby County.
Tottenham Hotspur and FA Cup semi-finalists Portsmouth were heading for a goalless draw at White Hart Lane until Darren Bent came off the bench.
The striker made it 1-0 in the 80th minute and then laid on the second for fellow substitute Jamie O'Hara moments later.
Sunderland moved further away from the drop zone with a 1-0 win away to Euro hopefuls Aston Villa, their first league win on their travels this season, thanks to Michael Chopra's 83rd minute goal. Bolton Wanderers remained in the relegation zone after a goalless draw at home to Manchester City.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
Japanese players are moving to English soccer in record numbers and more look set to follow with clubs attracted by their quality, strong work ethic and value for money. Kaoru Mitoma is the standout talent of five Japanese players in the English Premier League, with eight more in the Championship and two in League One. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, the captain of Japan, believes his compatriots are “being held in higher esteem” by English clubs compared with the past. “The staff at Liverpool ask me about lots of Japanese players, not necessarily with a view to a transfer, but just saying this or
Taiwan yesterday survived Bosnia and Herzegovina to win their Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Taipei Tennis Center. However, teammate Tony Wu kept the tie even, dominating world No. 86 Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 6-1.
