Roberto Carlos drilled a long-range free kick under Oliver Kahn to salvage a 1-1 draw for nine-time winner Real Madrid against Bayern Munich in their Champions League second-round, first-leg match Tuesday.
Roy Makaay notched his sixth goal for Bayern in the Champions League this season in the 75th minutes, heading in a superb cross form Claudio Pizarro. It was Pizarro's last move before getting replaced by Roque Santa Cruz.
Makaay's goal came after fierce Bayern pressure and the Bundesliga champion appeared to be heading for a well-deserved victory until Roberto Carlos stunned the Olympic stadium in the 83rd with his shot from some 30m out.

The Brazil defender shot low around the wall and Kahn, the Bayern and Germany captain, seemed to have the ball smothered by diving to his left, but it somehow slithered under his body and rolled into the corner of the net.
"We played super, we created a lot of chances, we were waiting to go ahead, we went ahead and then we suddenly conceded the goal. Oliver shouldn't be blamed for it, it happens," Makaay said.
Bayern had won all seven previous matches against Real in European competitions.

"This is positive history for us, we didn't lose," said Real coach Carlos Queiroz.
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld didn't want to put too much blame on his goalkeeper.
"It's bitter for Kahn, but that's destiny," Hitzfeld said.

Kahn's blunder resembled his mistake at the 2002 World Cup final, when he fumbled a free kick by Rivaldo to allow Ronaldo to score the first of Brazil's goals in a 2-0 victory.
The goalkeeper had been doubtful for the match because of back problems but Hitzfeld said Kahn was fit and didn't have any pain before the game.
Real star David Beckham said the match was "only the first half."
"We're happy. We didn't deserve to lose," Beckham said.
At the start, three successive corners by Beckham failed to threaten Kahn's goal.
With time running away in the first half, Kahn stopped Ronaldo's shot after a fast break.
Beckham curled a shot into Kahn's upper left corner in the 53rd, but the ball went just high.
On the other side, Makaay connected with a Ze cross from the left, but his header went just outside the post. Moments later, Pizarro fired low but narrowly missed the target and Michael Ballack followed with another close effort.
Roberto Carlos then tangled with Martin Demichelis following a rough tackle and retaliated by hitting the Bayern defender in the face. Demichelis earned a yellow card for his tackle and Roberto Carlos escaped unpunished.
In the 63rd, Casillas parried Hasan Salihamidzic's shot from close range as Real's defense again came under strong pressure, culminating in Makaay's goal.
After the late equalizer, Real cruised home.
Sparta Prague 0, AC Milan 0
Defending European champion AC Milan drew 0-0 with Sparta Prague.
"We had a good start ... but we came under pressure in the second half," Sparta coach Jiri Kotrba said. "[Milan] proved their superb qualities. The result is acceptable for us."
The Czech side, a clear underdog in the knock-out stage of the Champions League, took the initiative at early stages and created a few chances.
Striker Jiri Stajner eluded Paolo Maldini at the right edge of the area and Brazilian goalkeeper Dida had to use both fists to block his right foot effort in the sixth minute.
Two minutes later, Milan's defense failed to clear a corner kick properly and Pavel Pergl's powerful shot from outside the area went just wide.
Sparta captain Karel Poborsky tested Dida again in the 12th minute with a long-distance drive, forcing him dive to his right to save.
The defending champions threatened for the first time in the 19th minute with striker Filippo Inzaghi fouling defender Petr Johana but failing to beat Sparta 'keeper Jaromir Blazek, who raced off the line to save his shot from close range.
Three minutes before the interval, Milan's Brazilian defender Cafu broke down the right flank, leaving three opponents behind, but Sparta's defense blocked his low cross.
The Italian powerhouse became dominant in the second, creating a couple of chances around the hour mark. Striker Andriy Shevchenko, who lined up with Inzaghi, collected a neat pass from Clarence Seedorf in the 57th minute but Blazek won one-on-one.
Shevchenko struck again three minutes later with a volley from 20m but was denied by Blazek.
Milan continued to press but its strikers squandered their best chance in the 72nd minute. After Giuseppe Pancaro's fierce header off an Andrea Pirlo free kick cross, both Shevchenko and Inzaghi failed to send home the rebound.
Sparta midfielder Lukas Zelenka attempted to reply in a rare counterattack six minutes before the final whistle, but Dida managed to block his low sharp shot from 18m, giving his team a commanding position before the second leg match scheduled in Milan for March 10.
Celta Vigo 2, Arsenal 3
Brazilian midfielder Edu netted in each half and French international Robert Pires grabbed the winner as Arsenal defeated Celta de Vigo 3-2.
Forward Edu Schmidt and midfielder Jose Ignacio Saenz replied for Celta, although their goals couldn't stop the English team from establishing itself as clear favorite to reach the quarterfinals.
Arsenal's victory was its first in seven visits to Spain under coach Arsene Wenger.
"The team played well, it got what it wanted and we're all very happy," Arsenal's Spanish striker Jose Antonio Reyes told Spanish TV.
Celta, lying 16th in the Spanish league, gave a plucky display under coach Radomir Antic, who was in charge of his first Champions League game since Barcelona's quarterfinal defeat against Juventus last March.
"It's not impossible to win over there. We've nothing to lose," Jose Ignacio said.
The Premiership leader, without five players including England international left back Ashley Cole and Dutch striker Dennis Bergkamp, found itself troubled all match by Celta crosses from both wings.
However, it was Arsenal who took the lead in the 18th minute from a cross by Pires which led to Edu's scrambled goal.
Left unmarked at the far post, the Brazilian headed toward goal but the ball hit Celta left back Juan Velasco. The Brazilian followed up to score with a shot which touched Argentine defender Eduardo Berizzo and goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero before rolling over the line.
Cavallero's forehead was cut by Edu's boot as he tried in vain to make the save, leading the game to be halted for four minutes.
Watched by England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, Celta fought back to level in the 27th minute when Edu Schmidt leaped majestically to send a looping header past the diving Jens Lehmann from a cross by former Arsenal left back Sylvinho.
The goal signaled a huge effort by Antic's team and Lehmann just managed to tip away a fierce shot from Edu in the 38th minute.
Celta almost took the lead immediately after the restart when captain Alexander Mostovoi headed onto the crossbar from Edu's cross from the left.
Reyes, Arsenal's recent big-money signing from Sevilla, came close to giving Arsenal the lead in the 54th minute when his shot was saved by the outstretched Cavallero. Thierry Henry sent the rebound wide from a good position.
Edu did better four minutes later when he doubled his tally with a swerving right-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area after evading Berizzo.
Celta drew deservedly level for the second time in the 64th minute when Jose Ignacio shot home from close range after defender Sergio Fernandez had headed on Mostovoi's corner.
But two minutes after Reyes was replaced by Nigeria forward Nwankwo Kanu, Pires grabbed Arsenal's winning goal in the 80th minute with a low close-range shot from Henry's pass.
Lokomotiv Moscow 2, Monaco 1
Marat Izmailov and Vladimir Maminov scored a goal each to lift Lokomotiv Moscow over Monaco 2-1 in a Champions League second round, first leg match.
Monaco's Fernando Morientes replied in the second half for Monaco, which may need the away goal when it hosts Lokomotiv in the second leg on March 10.
Lokomotiv, which hadn't played a competitive match since losing to Arsenal 2-0 in the Champions League group stage last December, was in control of the game in the first half.
Georgia international striker Mikhail Ashvetia nearly opened the scoring for the home side just four minutes into the game, but he failed to take control of an upfield pass from behind.
Twelve minutes later, Ashvetia missed a clear opportunity, firing over the crossbar from just 6m off another pass from behind.
His header off a left-wing pass from midfielder Sergei Gurenko went wide in the 25th minute.
Izmailov hit the target in the 32nd minute off a pass from Dmitry Loskov from the right. He dribbled past Monaco's Akis Zikos and Patrice Evra in the penalty box and left goalkeeper Flavio Rome no chance, firing into the right upper corner from close range.
Monaco's only chance in the first half came four minutes before the interval when Lokomotiv goalkeeper Sergei Ovchnnikov could not control the ball after Lucas Bernardi's powerful kick from outside the penalty box. But there were no Monaco players in the box to race to the opportunity.
Lokomotiv continued to control after the break and Loskov shaved the left post off a pass from Vadim Evseev in the 59th minute. Seconds later, Loskov and Evseev assisted Maminov to make it 2-0 for Lokomotiv.
Monaco narrowed the gap in the 69th, capitalizing on a mistake by Ovchinnikov, who left the goal to intercept Julien Rodriguez's header, but Rodriguez sent the ball into the ground and Morientes knocked it home.
Nigerian international striker James Obiorah silenced the 25,000 crowd at Lokomotiv stadium when he failed to beat Roma one-on-one in the fading seconds of regulation to improve Lokomotiv's chances in the second leg.
Bologna on Thursday advanced past Empoli to reach their first Coppa Italia final in more than half a century. Thijs Dallinga’s 87th-minute header earned Bologna a 2-1 win and his side advanced 5-1 on aggregate. Giovanni Fabbian opened the scoring for Bologna with a header seven minutes in. Then Viktor Kovalenko equalized for Empoli in the 30th minute by turning in a rebound to finish off a counterattack. Bologna won the first leg 3-0. In the May 14 final in Rome, Bologna are to face AC Milan, who eliminated city rivals Inter 4-1 on aggregate following a 3-0 win on Wednesday. Bologna last reached the
If the Wild finally break through and win their first playoff series in a decade, Minnesota’s top line likely will be the reason. They were all over the Golden Knights through the first two games of their NHL Western Conference quarter-finals series, which was 1-1 going back to Minnesota for Game 3 today. The Wild tied the series with a 5-2 win on Tuesday. Matt Boldy had three goals and an assist in the first two games, while Kirill Kaprizov produced two goals and three assists. Joel Eriksson Ek, who centers the line, has yet to get on the scoresheet. “I think the biggest
The Minnesota Timberwolves, with so many promising performances spoiled by late mistakes fresh in their memory bank, sure timed this strong finish well. Jaden McDaniels scored a career playoff-high 30 points and spearheaded Minnesota’s stifling defense on an ailing Luka Doncic, and the Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-104 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday night. “Jaden never looks tired. He looks like he could play 48 minutes,” said teammate Anthony Edwards, who had 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Julius Randle added 22 points for the Wolves, who outscored
From a commemorative jersey to a stadium in his name, Argentine soccer organizers are planning a slew of tributes to their late “Captain” Pope Francis, eulogized as the ultimate team player. Tributes to the Argentine pontiff, a lifelong lover of the game, who died on Monday at the age of 88, have been peppered with soccer metaphors in his homeland. “Francisco. What a player,” the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) said, describing the first pope from Latin America and the southern hemisphere as a generational talent who “never hogged the ball” and who showed the world “the importance of having an Argentine captain,
