Pomegranates often resemble small jewel boxes, their glossy red skin hiding clusters of seeds that shine like rubies. This striking appearance has long attracted curiosity and fascination, and has helped the fruit acquire symbolic weight across different civilizations.
In Western traditions, especially in ancient Greece and Rome, the fruit symbolized fertility and the cycles of nature. One of its most famous roles is featured in the Greek myth of Persephone, who tasted pomegranate seeds in the underworld and was therefore bound to return there each year. Her absence and return were believed to shape the changing seasons. In many Asian cultures, the pomegranate conveys a different yet equally meaningful message. Since it contains so many seeds, it has long been associated with abundance, good fortune and the hope for a thriving family line.
A particularly vivid tradition survives in modern Greece. On New Year’s Day, families smash a ripe pomegranate on their doorstep, watching the seeds scatter across the ground. The number and spread of the seeds are believed to predict the household’s luck in the coming year, turning this simple act into a gesture of optimism and prosperity.

The pomegranate also appears in Chinese culture in the expression “pomegranate skirt.” This phrase originated from the Han Dynasty, when fashionable women wore skirts dyed with pomegranate flower juice. Consequently, the expression evolved to describe beautiful women, with “falling under the pomegranate skirt” suggesting admiration for a woman’s charm. Despite its modest size, the pomegranate certainly carries plenty of stories worth exploring.

At the heart of the Human Library are thousands of volunteers who are willing to share their life stories with the public.
